There’s this restaurant my family loves that serves only two things… French fries and ice cream. I know what you’re thinking — it’s not the most intuitive combination — but hear me out: creamy and sweet, crispy and salty. When you bring them together in one basket, you get the benefits of both worlds. My dining experience fits the definition of “boundary spanner,” a term I came across during my dissertation literature review and immediately identified with. It’s the idea that there are university researchers and there are practitioners in the field, each with their own area of expertise. And as a consultant and an action researcher, I function as an intermediary between the two: • I make academic research more accessible for practitioners. • I bring the reality of the practitioners’ work and ideas to academia. While their worlds connect, sometimes they need a helper in the middle. This is a big part of why I am on the board of the Network for Research and Jewish Education. I see myself as a boundary spanner of academic and practitioner spaces. In Fryce Cream terms, I’m the basket that brings the fries and ice cream together. 😅 I’d like (maybe that’s too strong of a word) to share one of my most cringey professional lessons of all time: 🌍 It was spring in Vienna approximately 7 years ago, and I was invited to "join the big kids" for a conference where I was to share my learnings and experiences from the field with both peers and “superiors”. I was already beyond nervous. The group included many senior economists, and so I thought they’d probably be most interested in seeing the numbers. I had some stories lined up to speak to the numbers too. I really practiced the old-age rote memorization of facts and data. Vienna has been a hub of modernization for many many years now. Oh, and this conference was in such a beautiful space, maybe it was a hotel? I don't remember. I do remember: Swanky. Fancy. Modern. 🌞 It’s finally the day, and everyone presenting to our group that day really knocked it out of the park. Great! Easy – I got this. I do this all day long. It’s my work…Projects I’d been working on for years at that point. I had all the figures and facts ready to go in my noggin. Well, they were on the slides anyway, so it really wouldn't be that hard to get through. AND when my time arrived, in this beautiful modern tech space, the presentation I’d gone over time and time again and had just reviewed…wouldn’t open. 😱 Ooooh! I must have missed that part of the memo - the part where things don’t ALWAYS go as planned. I stood silent. Frozen. This has to work. That’s what I planned. I worked hard. Now, even with all my practice and rehearsal, I cannot remember one dang piece of data. What was I going to share again? What was I going to say? When I say it felt like aaaaages that I just stood there, I mean AGES. ⏲ 📊 The quantitative data and charts I spent time developing wasn’t going to work here. I had to figure out how to quickly and clearly get to the heart of the matter. What was I doing there? What was my goal for the presentation (besides impressing my seniors and not looking beyond unprepared!)? 🧤 I came to share stories. Whether charts and data or photos of the communities we worked with…it was the stories, the impacts, their strengths. 💪 I was on the social development team. How do I share the impacts of development on societies we worked with? Why are those impacts important? How does that help us strengthen our projects and redefine our roles in these communities who already have so many social assets? 💛 I felt scared and I realized it was because I probably strayed from my authentic self of connecting with others, and instead did what I thought others wanted of me. People-pleasing. It was helpful to tap into what my fear told me that day - need for safety and support? It was a reminder to try to feel peaceful and powerful in who I was. Chenchen Zhang, The Daniel Jordan Fiddle Foundation public policy fellow for the 2023-24 term at ASU’s Morrison Institute for Public Policy in partnership with the First Place Global Leadership Institute, has completed her white paper. Titled “Exploring the Influence of Zoning Ordinances on the Development of Neuro-Inclusive Communities,” Chenchen dove into the subject with passion and precision. This visionary white paper highlights the role of zoning in the development of more autism-friendly spaces with the goal of changes in public policy for greater inclusivity for all.
