Labor Day—the day we celebrate by not laboring—has its roots in the labor movement of the late 19th century. Back then, workers were stuck in grueling conditions, often working 12-hour days, six days a week 😓. Naturally, they weren't thrilled about this. So, in true "enough is enough" fashion, they started organizing protests and strikes, demanding better hours, fair wages, and, you know, the radical idea of not being treated like robots 🤖. The first Labor Day parade was held on September 5, 1882, in New York City 🗽. Thousands of workers took to the streets, not to chase down a food truck 🚚, but to march for their rights ✊. The idea caught on, and by 1894, President Grover Cleveland made it a national holiday. Of course, this was after a few "oops" moments with strike-related violence that he wanted to smooth over 🫣. Today, Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer—a last hurrah of BBQs 🍔, beach trips 🏖️, and, for some, awkwardly remembering they still own white pants 👖 they probably shouldn't wear after this weekend. But let's not forget its origins: a hard-won day off that gives us all a chance to kick back and enjoy the fruits of our (or someone else's) labor! 🎉 Honestly, I didn’t know the above earlier today—Chat GPT came in handy to teach me this part of history 🤓. Michigan Business Owners: make sure to take a look at how ESTA is going to affect your operations- you can impact the decision making on this by reaching out to your state rep - see link below.
We have one last chance to fix this before it negatively impacts the Michigan business community, and Michigan's economy as a whole. Don't assume that you know the impact until you read the fine print. The administrative impact, especially on small businesses, will be catastrophic if this takes effect as written. https://lnkd.in/gYTDCenp

There have been a lot of posts on here today doing self-promotion for employees. At a glance, a nice gesture, but... it misses the point of the holiday itself. #LaborDay is more than just a day off from work and self congratulatory posts from companies. The first Labor Day was 142 years ago. It was actually the first Tuesday in September, not Monday. Also, it was created by the #CentralLaborUnion in New York. The fact that so many non-union companies are posting about Labor Day today is comical at best, hypocritical at worst. 12 years after the first holiday was celebrated, President Cleveland made it official nationwide. Without unions, I would've been lost 17 years ago. I just moved back here to my home state of Washington with my wife at the time and our 2 sons from her family's state, Utah. We had been there since my ETS from the Army on Memorial Day 2005. If you remember, 2007-2009 was bleak for the economy. Thankfully, I was able to get in with #Local32 (United Association of Union Plumbers, Fitters, Welders and Service Techs) up in Seattle as a commercial plumber. Without Local 32, I wouldn't have had any steady income and for a small family during that economic depression, it would've been a horrible experience. If you have a minute or two today, stop and think of the real reason this day is an official holiday. This list of 25 firsts thanks to unions is a good start. (Image of the list is from AFL-CIO... the second image is my second youngest son wearing my hardhat all those years ago.) #UnionStrong #ThankAUnion 💯

Labor Day thoughts (and a small rant): thank labor activists and organized laborers for this day off. Because of these people, we have this day off, the standard of an 8 hour work day. A weekend for many, a day or two off during the week, standard for most. No more children in fields and factories. Safety regulations and recourse if that is violated. FMLA and maybe some day, paid family leave. Reflect on the contributions of American workers who literally built this county's infrastructure and economy. So many people who came here from all over the world to also build a better life for themselves. Reflect on the millions of people who keep the US running 24/7, many of whom will *not* have this day off. People who do not appreciate these thoughts, bust unions and categorically deny living wages really should sit this one out. Please don't hold a flag in one hand, a hot dog in the other and righteously shout about "people stealing our jobs" and "no one wants to work". This is peak hypocrisy. Instead, look around- see how hard (and fking expensive) this American life is and have just a moment of gratitude for the people who pave the roads, clean the buildings, ring up groceries, and tend to our health and well being. Every. Day. Organize. Vote. Vote and organize. These are not G-d given rights. People sacrificed and died for the right to do this. Nearly everyone will suffer if we lose these rights. Remember this as so many who wave flags and hotdogs actively work, organize and vote, to destroy these rights. I am grateful beyond measure for the rights to vote and organize, the people who made them happen- and still do. Show your love to this country; the people in it, those who can work, those who cannot, and almost certainly would if they could. Vote. Organize. Organize and vote. Happy Labor Day. Enjoy your hot dog. 🌻💜🌈
