On the eve of the end of our 9th Hacking for Defense® (H4D) class at Stanford University I can't think of a more important topic than this. The problems our country faces are changing at an ever increasing pace, requiring leaders to understand sooner and react faster than they ever have. This generation of leaders has to think differently than the last. We recognized this a decade ago and have learned over the last 9 years that this model of problem-focused, experiential education sets students on the right path to be the leaders we need in the future. We just need more....more H4D, more problems, more universities, more mentors. Today..now, not 10 years in the future and certainly not at only a couple dozen universities. Hat tip to the amazing teams at BMNT, Common Mission Project, Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), NSIN - National Security Innovation Network, Office of Naval Research and many others for moving the needle. One more to William Treseder for his exceptional leadership and to Callye Keen for pulling yet another amazing story out of his guests. Download the 2024 ACS (Australian Computer Society) Digital Pulse to explore the four areas that will support the growth of a skilled tech workforce in Australia. One area that resonated with me is getting kids into IT careers: 👉 Parents information campaign. A campaign targeted at parents to build understanding about careers in tech, empowering them to encourage digital skills will help unlock the next generation of tech talent. 👉 Greater guidance on use of devices and promoting safe use. There is an opportunity to provide the evidence base around learning outcomes and other impacts related to age of children’s access to devices. 👉 Mentoring schemes. As recommended in the Diversity in STEM Pathways review, presence at school and tertiary education provider events could enable early connection to future tech talent. https://lnkd.in/gFMz5YQp

𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲 Earlier this month, my son started his sophomore year in high school. This week, I attended curriculum night, excited most to explore the Cisco Networking Academy lab—where my son spends 3 hours daily (including an extra "zero" period, an hour before regular school starts), learning to design, secure, and manage corporate enterprise networks. It’s an amazing public school program, offering college credits, a CCNA certification, and practical skills that pave the way for future careers. However, what moved me most wasn't the tech lab (which was definitely impressive), but instead his English class. His teacher began with an assignment she also gives to her students: Read the poem below and select a line or two that resonates with you. 𝗔𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 By Micky ScottBey Jones (and inspired by a poem by Beth Strano) Together we will create brave space Because there is no such thing as a “safe space” – We exist in the real world We all carry scars and we have all caused wounds. In this space We seek to turn down the volume of the outside world. We amplify voices that fight to be heard elsewhere, We call each other to more truth and love We have the right to start somewhere and continue to grow. We have the responsibility to examine what we think we know. We will not be perfect. It will not always be what we wish it to be But It will be our brave space together, And We will work on it side by side. After this, the teacher shared her 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁: “I will approach students and situations with 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, knowing that there is always more that I do not know and cannot see. I will create space. 𝗜 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻. 𝗜 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱. 𝗜 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝘆 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽𝘀. 𝗜 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘇𝗲. 𝗜 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀. 𝗜 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿.“ These warmed my heart! ❤️ Creating a “brave” space—in school, business, and life — can teach empathy and compassion, open minds to alternative viewpoints, nurture empowerment and growth, feed creativity, and allow a talent to develop into a superpower. Care to comment on what line(s) resonates with you? ~Nicole #bsd405 #bravespace #inclusion #belonging
