“As Count Axel and his wife knew very well, the beautifully, painfully irrelevant time garden was dying. The MET Gala is the enclosed, elaborate time garden, a wonderful display unaware of the dystopia that lurks outside its doors.” Read my review of the #METGala2024 on the StyleTitle Substack

"Consider the most powerfully glamorous images from the high period of progress glamour, extending from the 1920s to the mid-1960s. They fall into several distinct categories: 1) effortless rapid transportation, which starts with automobiles and diesel trains and continues to jets and spaceships; 2) cities that appear orderly and clean; 3) luxurious domestic contentment without drudgery or want..." https://lnkd.in/gMAjMh5s

Art is definitely a brilliant tool for healing. It is often your subconscious expressing itself. A lot of what you may believe is just you drawing or writing or filming... A lot of what sparks your genius, intrigues you, gives you a passion to move to action is internal. Being black and diaspora informs so much of my art. Even when I'm working on abstract pieces... There is still a strong link to my very dynamic shared story. The African story. Rediscovering legendary narratives that push back against the limiting view point that covers only 5 centuries of the accepted 5 millenia the African civilisations have existed in. Learning these stories help to lift us above the trauma that comes from the era of human trafficking and colonisation. Is monumental. We can tap into the vibrant and healthy complex and familiar range of cultures that have been rebirthed within the diaspora today. I am called to recognise the Cowrie Shell and coral beads as a link to our maritime story. There was an economic system that thrived across the Atlantic seas, linking the eastern world in commerce that predates what we now call our peak time in business and global trade. Our wounds are still fresh but stories are popping up within our DNA. We are called to research and learn so that we can create on a canvas new stories, new visions and truly free ourselves from the metaphorical chains that still have us locked out of true expansion when separated from oppression and local social and global biases that place African descendants as inferior to the Europeans. “I have a friend who's an artist and has sometimes taken a view which I don't agree with very well. He'll hold up a flower and say, “Look how beautiful it is.” And I'll agree, I think. And he says, ”See, as an artist, I can see how beautiful this is. But you, as a scientist, oh, take this all apart and it becomes a dull thing. And I think that he's kind of nutty. First of all, the beauty that he sees is available to other people and to me, too; I believe, although I may not be quite as refined esthetically as he is, that I can appreciate the beauty of a flower. At the same time, I see much more about the flower than he sees. I could imagine the cells in it, the complicated actions inside, which also have a beauty. I mean, it's not just beauty at this dimension, one centimeter; there's also beauty at the smaller dimensions. The inner structure. Also the processes, the fact that the colors and the flower evolved in order to attract insects to pollinate it is interesting. It means that insects can see the color. It adds a question: does this esthetic sense also exist in the lower forms? Why is it esthetic? All kinds of interesting questions, which science, knowledge only adds to the excitement, the mystery and the awe of a flower. It only adds”. Even the science is a kind of Art.
