Had a ramblechat with my old pal Rob Alderson at Design Week about the potential benefits of knowing a bit more about the state of our industry... 'you can't improve what you don't measure' etc. Lots of folks (including some friends) much smarter than me had good stuff to say – check out the 25 Ideas for 2025 here... https://lnkd.in/edqTQVkQ

My second year of design school was packed full of lessons. It taught me how to manage my time, where to focus my energy, and a ton of skills I never thought I'd learn. Most importantly, a round of applause for this one, people: I had only a couple of all-nighters! A huge improvement from last year. 👏 You might remember the exact moment you learned some of these lessons back in the day, or you might just be getting started on your design journey, either way, this one’s for you. Here are the 12 things I learned during my second year of design school... 1. You have to be the one to set deadlines and requirements for yourself 2. Work hard enough and the opportunities start to come looking for you 3. A few extra points aren't worth killing yourself over 4. If you feel overwhelmed by your own design, it might be a sign to simplify 5. No design project, done the right way, is ever done alone 6. Always talk to the people you're designing for 7. The quicker you start, the faster it'll be over 8. You're not supposed to learn everything all at once 9. Putting effort into your relationships with others pays off 10. Just because you change directions doesn't mean you're behind 11. Stop letting people be too soft on you 12. Betting on yourself is one of the best things you can do 💡I go into a lot more detail in the article on my blog, which is linked in the comments. Check it out if you're curious.💡 I'm about halfway done with my design education and I'm looking forward to the things I'll learn in the future. So now that you've heard from me, I'd like to hear from you. What are some things of the biggest things you learned in design school that still help you out today? Let me know below 👇 I'll be taking notes! ✍️🤓 - 👋 I'm Rebecca Scarbrough, an Industrial Design student at Georgia Tech and the Founder of Design Does That, a blog dedicated to observing the field of design from a student's perspective Follow me if you'd like to tag along throughout my design school experience! Let's go on this journey together 🌱💪 #industrialdesign #designer #designersoflinkedin #designstudents #womenindesign #designschool #designeducation

"This yellow Ducky! It sits on a central display in my living room, and has sparked many conversations and smiles, and I even got nicknamed by it! But for me, it reminds me of Creation and Destruction. Deep, right? 😏 - It's six pieces of Lego blocks! Years ago, during a workshop at a dear friend's design studio, we were asked to make as many ducks in a minute out of these 6 blocks. I made 13 and I thought I did great! As it turned out, that wasn't a very high number - there were people who made 25-26! Imagine my feeling of disappointment! 😥 But then I realised something important that made the Creator in me feel very scared and very excited at the same time - the Destroyer in me was taking apart every duck I made, in order to create the next one, while others who made more ducks simply changed the configuration of a duck by moving one block! Yes, some of those ducks looked quite funky, but hey, they were still all ducks! Who's to say they weren't? And they were quite beautiful 🙂 The big learning for me was that in our design process - the Creation, we don't always have to discard everything and start from scratch in our iterations - Destruction. I learned that small pivots in our design process - be it conceptual or otherwise, small shifts of perspective, or just small changes in the way we build something, can make better and more efficient outcomes, and make us and others happy... Now think Climate Change, and ask yourself how many times are you a Creator or a Destroyer in a minute, hour, day or a lifetime? Have you pivoted yet? 😊 So whenever I see the little Ducky in my living room, it prompts me to ask myself - Are you creating or destroying, Sandra? Is there space to pivot and make life better (for all)? Can you make that change? ...And that makes me feel happy 🙂 " Aleksandra Rotar, Founding Director, CMRU School of Design, CMR University. How do we design better products? Anthony Fadell shares three tips: 1. Look broader - Larger the base, we see better and think bigger 2. Look closer - Observe minutely 3. Think young - Just like how kids ask WHY for every question #product #design

June 29 - The positive emotional affect of a device or product is said to be most impactful when behavioural, visceral and reflective design collide. Do you agree with this theory?
