Sad to know about the Southern California is facing a crisis of unprecedented scale. As Santa Ana winds fuel “extremely critical fire conditions” across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, firefighters continue their heroic efforts to battle the blazes. But the devastation is heartbreaking. • More than 25 lives have been lost in the raging wildfires. • The fires have already swept through 40,000 acres of land in the Greater Los Angeles area. • More than 12,300 structures have been destroyed, leaving thousands of people displaced. • Los Angeles County has declared a public health emergency, warning that smoke and particulate matter could pose serious health risks both now and in the future. The origins of the largest fire, the Palisades Fire, remain under investigation, but it’s clear that the battle to contain these blazes is far from over. Despite the tragedy, the resilience of communities, and the tireless work of over 10,000 firefighters, gives us hope. This is the time for unity, strength, and compassion. My heart is with those affected by these devastating wildfires. I pray for the safety of all first responders, the healing of those who’ve lost so much, and the protection of the communities. May California emerge stronger from these dark times. #CaliforniaWildfires #PrayersForCalifornia #SantaAnaWinds #FirefightersHero #PalisadesFire #CaliforniaStrong #SupportTheFirefighters #HealthEmergency #CommunityResilience #HopeInAdversity

Emergencies and disasters often highlight the vulnerabilities in our systems, especially for communities that face additional barriers, such as people with disabilities. NPR recently shared the tragic story of Anthony Mitchell Sr. and his son Justin, both wheelchair users, who lost their lives in a fire in Altadena, California. This heartbreaking incident underscores the critical need for inclusive emergency planning and response. While it’s important to acknowledge the immense challenges first responders face during crises, it’s equally vital to ensure that the needs of the disability community are prioritized in preparedness, evacuation protocols, and response efforts. This loss is one of many emerging from the wildfires in Southern California and serves as a somber reminder that accessibility, inclusion, and planning for diverse needs must be central to how we approach emergencies. Life-giving water is always there – day after day, year after year. When water can be counted on, people can live differently. As we continue unveiling our new Water for Good branding, we want to share our core commitments, too. These are the foundations of our work that, alongside our faith, serve as the pillars that uphold everything we do and work to achieve. Our first commitment is to bring access to safe, reliable water. Statistically, every two minutes, a child under the age of five dies from a preventable waterborne disease. Water for Good works in communities with some of the highest risks of waterborne disease to combat this tragedy. We see a future where every person lives freely without the burden of spending arduous hours every day collecting water or suffering from preventable waterborne diseases. And we work every day to fulfill this promise of reliable, safe water for people in areas that need it most.

REMEMBERING GRENFELL 💚 Today marks the anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire, a tragic event that claimed 72 lives and forever altered the lives of countless others. My thoughts and heart goes out to the families and survivors who continue to live with the profound impact of that night. I also want to extend my thoughts to all those who played key roles in the immediate and ongoing response. Call handlers who had to endure the agony of hearing people’s final moments whilst begging for help. Firefighters who risked their lives amidst harrowing conditions to save others. Medical professionals who provided critical care to the injured and traumatised. Volunteers and community who’s groups sprang into action, offering shelter, comfort, and support. Each played a vital role in facing one of our nation's darkest moments. The Grenfell Tower fire has shone a harsh light on the shortcomings in building safety regulations and the urgent need for comprehensive reform. It emphasised the necessity for stricter safety standards and greater accountability. As we approach the release of the Phase 2 report, it’s important to focus on what we can change going forward. The forthcoming report will provide crucial insights into the circumstances surrounding the incident and the systemic issues that contributed to it. It is essential that we not only acknowledge these findings but also commit to turning lessons identified into lessons learned. We owe it to the victims, the survivors, and their families to build a future where such a tragedy can never happen again. As the Inquiry's findings come to light, let’s channel our grief and determination into concrete actions that honour their memory and protect future generations. #Grenfell💚

About a year ago, I wrote for MedPage Today about the dangers of disinformation in healthcare and social media. I never imagined I'd be addressing the same issue in disaster response in my home state. Yesterday, FEMA had to make "operational adjustments" in #NorthCarolina due to a surge in threats fueled by disinformation about their response to #HurricaneHelene. Sadly, false claims and conspiracy theories are spreading, stoked by fear-mongering rhetoric. While some political leaders, like Rep. Chuck Edwards, have stepped up to debunk these falsehoods, they can’t do it alone. Misinformation is an existential threat to public health. Healthcare leaders, entrepreneurs, and practitioners must also stand against misinformation. Lives are on the line. We cannot afford to let conspiracy theories endanger public health and safety. Who’s with me? #PublicHealth #CombatDisinformation #MisinformationMatters #HealthLeadership Axios #disinformation ABIG Health
