News from the R&D engines department: We are launching the research project AmmoniaMot 2 to develop a four-stroke, medium-speed, dual-fuel test #engine that runs on #ammonia. Supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, the project commenced in August 2024 and is scheduled to run for 3½ years. It is the successor to the ‘AmmoniaMot’ project, which dealt with fundamental investigations concerning ammonia combustion in internal-combustion engines and that ended in May 2024. In the first AmmoniaMot project, we laid a strong foundation together with our partners from industry and research institutes and proved that ammonia can be a suitable fuel for medium-speed applications with the potential to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by 90-95% while complying with existing #emission regulations. Now we are taking the next and logical step to turn our concept into a research engine. Green ammonia is seen as a promising future fuel option especially for cargo vessels, in addition to green #methanol and green methane that look favorable e.g. for ferries, cruise and other specialized vessels. Initiated in 2008, the symbolic ‘ZeDay’, also known as ‘Zero Emission(s) Day’, has been celebrated around the world every year since then on September 21. The aim is to give the earth a break for a day – ideally in a sustainable way beyond this day of action. In a short space of time, it has become a global movement with awareness campaigns and (educational) events, including in schools. Specifically, there is a call to reduce, minimize or even completely eliminate the consumption of fossil fuels such as oil, gas or coal and the energy obtained from them. Monitoring and complying with limit values in line with environmental and safety regulations is a task for society as a whole, and one to which we are also committed: The DURAG GROUP has an extensive product portfolio and decades of experience. Industry and transport are the main sources of environmental pollution caused by emissions. With our innovative solutions in the fields of emission measurement technology and raw gas monitoring, we support companies and research institutions in making the future cleaner and healthier. Our divisions DURAG, DURAG DATA SYSTEMS, GRIMM AEROSOL TECHNIK and AP2E include durable and low-maintenance measuring devices for all requirements. They enable application-based selection of different methods for the measurement and monitoring of the dust concentration and volume flow in flue gas and for continuous mercury and multi-component gas analysis. On September 21, the symbolic ‘ZeDay’ is celebrated around the world. In this context, it is encouraged to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels such as oil, gas or coal and the energy obtained from them to a minimum. As a part of the DURAG GROUP, our technologies support its major goal of making the environment safer and cleaner. Read more about “ZeDay” and its importance for the DURAG GROUP in this post: https://lnkd.in/dmNW3Pxp

World’s First Ammonia-Powered Vessel Completes Maiden Voyage! Amogy, a pioneer in ammonia-to-power solutions, achieves a significant milestone with the successful demonstration of the world’s first carbon-free, ammonia-powered maritime vessel. The NH3 Kraken, a retrofitted 1957 tugboat, completed its maiden voyage on a tributary of the Hudson River, showcasing the potential of ammonia as a sustainable maritime fuel. This achievement contributes to the industry's goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Seonghoon Woo, CEO and co-founder of Amogy, emphasizes the attainability of reducing global carbon emissions through this breakthrough. He affirms that the successful demonstration of the ammonia-powered vessel paves the way for commercialization and real-world applications. Amogy's innovative technology, which converts liquid ammonia into hydrogen and nitrogen for power generation in a fuel cell, offers a promising solution for carbon-free maritime operations. The NH3 Kraken's utilization of green ammonia, produced solely from renewable energy sources, further underscores its environmental sustainability. This groundbreaking voyage not only showcases the feasibility of ammonia as a clean maritime fuel but also highlights the potential for widespread adoption in the industry.
