L2s: General Purpose or Use-Case-Specific Roll-Ups? 🚀 A lot of gaming projects I've seen pitching these days wrap themselves as L2 or even L3 infra. A brief look at L2Beat proves the point: there are currently 13 gaming L2s with upcoming launches, making up 16% of all upcoming launches. This reflects a broader trend of L2s becoming more segmented by sector, application, or function. 🕹️🔗 Understanding the motivation is key. For example, most L1s face massive scaling problems, and games need a large number of transactions with minimal to zero fees. This drives the shift towards L2s and L3s for better scalability and cost efficiency. Some of these chains may be specifically geared towards hosting an entire vertical, such as a roll-up that hosts games, while others want a customizable chain for their specific product, where features like account abstraction and other dependencies can be tuned. I am personally bullish on use-case-specific roll-ups and much more bearish on the prospects of any new general-purpose L2s and their tokens. The top 7 tokens for L2 collectively already have over USD 30 billion of FDV, and many strong projects intend to launch over the medium term. This means potentially x2-x3 to the current FDV in the midterm, which doesn't seem absorbable. Not to mention, most L2 tokens are not even the base money in their own ecosystems. This is not a criticism but rather an observation of the current state. Do you see consolidation coming, or will the market continue to fragment?👇 #l2s #web3 #crypto #gaming

Today, I came across an insightful post discussing the challenges faced by GameFi and other blockchain-based games. The post highlighted a key issue: the difference between players and speculators. Players engage with games for entertainment, not for speculation. This distinction is crucial. Games are meant to be enjoyed, and tokens are separate from this experience. How we attract more players and why investors should be interested in our tokens are distinct matters. With increasingly stringent financial regulations, the traditional deep integration of tokens with games may no longer be feasible. As we adapt to these changes, it’s clear that the old models are evolving. A balanced approach, where speculation and gameplay are temporarily separated, seems necessary. This means that game design or Tokenomics experts will no longer focus on P2E, which are likely to face regulatory and hurdles only be implemented in certain countries without expanding. The focus should shift from using games as financial investment tools to enhancing the gaming experience. This aligns with the industry’s move towards a healthier fintech market, where player profits may not be as huge as before. I believe Web3 is still in its early stages, with much room for growth and chat. But adhering to legal standards is a fundamental principle that cannot be compromised.

Gaming is absolutely and undoubtedly #1 use case in crypto. When I think about gaming, I think back to my early days of Lineage2 and WoW, crawling forums trying to find answers, chatting on Reddit-like russian forums and otherwise darkest and geekiest places the web had to offer. The people around me were very down-to-earth people. Open, giving and caring community. We raided together, we spent 10, 15, and sometimes 20 hours a day together. We bonded online first. Some of us would travel to another city to catch up and befriend each other IRL. That same spirit roamed directly from the 90s to modern gaming as we know it. What I see in Web3 is a replica of the entire Web2 cycle from 90s to maybe 10s where the industry swallowed itself and turned into Netflix-like house of crap self-sucking type of content. If we go back to 90s and check what happened to gaming, games were feeding the entire world with cultural tit-bids. Games were the sole reason people bought PCs, attended conferences, learned to code, filmed movies inspired by their favorite games. In other words, gaming was the ultimate use case. Extrapolating to Web3 games, All the stupid clickers being popular right now? Not the gaming I’m talking about. Clickers and other airdrop-based games are somewhere in the 80s on the timeline I introduced earlier. The good news is the first 90s-like games in Web3 are ALREADY being developed: Wagmi Games, My Pet Hooligan, Pixelmon, everything BEAM , Shrapnel, Guild of Guardians, Wilder World, Blocklords, OFF the Grid, Nyan Heroes, Metalcore — most built by the people with 10-20-30 years of game-building experience. Some of the top producers and creative directors in the world. The evolution is gonna be rip. Nothing happens then everything happens

Web3 games aren’t there yet, several challenges hamper the progress of the gaming industry and every quarter, more games get discontinued, ~ 60 in Q1 24 (50% of new games introduced) The landscape is still developing, so these situations are palpable especially as we try to make blockchain technology workable. The major problems for these games are: 1. Treasury: “No Money, Many Problems”. Game developers have to do better with their funds, encourage lean operations where you must because funding opportunities are not very predictable. Robust treasury management increases runway longevity and reduces premature product shipment just to raise more cash. 2. Gameplay: We’re getting there but this has to improve a lot. The resources for web2 AAA studios are many times larger than web3 but with more money entering the latter arena recently, devs need to fine-tune their product to induce adoption. 3. Onboarding: This has become a tired subject but remains relevant. Grasping blockchain-specific elements is difficult, so games that have easier onboarding procedures will naturally gain more users. Specialized firms for onboarding should be leveraged wisely by devs. 4. Other factors include Security & Regulations Risks, Accessibility & Game Economy. Time, progressive iterations and innovative offerings will alleviate most of these bottlenecks.
