We are thrilled that our systematic review and meta-analysis on using multiple external representations has been published in the high-impact journal EPR. The topic has received great attention in STEM education because it necessitates using various symbolic (e.g., text and formula) and graphical representations (e.g., pictures and graphs) to convey subject content. Research has mainly explored effects of combining two representations, but the potential benefits of integrating more than two representations on students’ learning remain underexplored. This gap limits our understanding of promising educational practices and restricts the development of effective teaching strategies catering to students’ cognitive needs. To close this gap, we conducted a systematic review of 46 studies and a meta-analysis that included 132 effect sizes to evaluate the effectiveness of using more than two representations in STEM education and to identify moderating factors influencing learning and problem-solving. Gamified lessons and activities can motivate students, enhance engagement, and improve retention of scientific concepts. 🌟Excited to share our latest open access article in Science Education journal "Comparing the Impact of Physical and Virtual Manipulatives in Different Science Domains Among Preschoolers".  🔍 This study aimed to investigate whether the presence (when using physical manipulatives) or absence (when using virtual manipulatives) of haptic sensory feedback during experimentation can impact preschoolers’ conceptual understanding of concepts concerning three different subject domains. 📚 Important implications for science teaching and learning in the early childhood years are discussed. Rethinking Math and Science Education   The global drop in student enthusiasm in science and maths is worrying. Nevertheless, we can spark young learners' interest and ensure a bright future for science and technology by using engaging and effective teaching methods.     The Problem: Apathy is Growing   Many kids find math and science uninteresting, and unconnected. Traditional rote memorization and textbook-heavy lessons fail to engage learners. This impairs scientific and technological progress.     A Solution: Reactivating Learning.   To reverse this trend, schools must be transformed into captivating discovery centres. How to do this: • Task-based learning: Interactive experiments, projects, and activities make learning enjoyable. Building a model volcano to study geology or dissecting an owl pellet to study the food chain bring science to life for children and help them understand complex concepts. • Puzzles and Games Educational games, riddles, and simulations may make difficult concepts enjoyable. Virtual reality tours of the solar system can excite astronomy, while interactive games make the Pythagorean Theorem simple.     Why Creating compelling stories can help make science and math more approachable and motivating. Introduce students to fascinating scientist and mathematician biographies. Allow them to learn about Marie Curie's groundbreaking work or Albert Einstein's mind-boggling ideas. These stories humanise these issues and motivate future entrepreneurs.     Development of the Scientific Mindset:   Curiosity and a desire for proof are the driving forces behind science. Make pupils curious and cautious about information. Instruct them to seek proof and challenge assumptions. This encourages critical thinking and open-mindedness, both of which contribute to scientific advancement.   Making It Supportive: • Teacher Training: Teachers play an important role in instilling a passion of learning. Training them in engaging science and math teaching methodologies can transform everything. • Celebrating the Journey: Praise children for their effort, curiosity, and critical thinking, rather than their perfect solution. Students feel at ease taking risks and trying new things in this attractive learning environment. • Collaboration is essential: students should work together, share ideas, and learn from one another.     The Future We Want:   These strategies can help students ask questions, research science and math, and think critically about the world. This will nurture a new generation of inquisitive minds, ready to progress in science and technology. Our capacity to pique students' interest will shape the future of science and innovation. The recent article, “New Tools Make Chemistry Accessible to Vision-Impaired Students” shines a spotlight on the critical need for inclusive education in STEM fields. It identifies how the ChemBAM project at the University of Birmingham is breaking down barriers, ensuring that students with vision impairments can fully engage in chemistry experiments. Students with vision impairments should no longer be sidelined during laboratory work. The integration of innovative tools makes a significant difference in their ability to participate actively. Immersive solutions are not limited to visuals. By utilizing talking thermometers, timers, multisensory indicators, and tactile models, we can revolutionize the learning experience and create a more welcoming environment for all students. This initiative connects the curriculum to real-world applications, allowing pupils with vision impairments to explore and understand science more vividly.
