In the midst of Paris Olympic Fever, I thought of sharing "Breaking Barriers: The Hyped Meritocracy and the Genuine Meritocracy and Equity in Professional Sports." In the world of professional sports, meritocracy shines brightly, especially as we celebrate the Paris Olympics 2024. Unlike job applications, university admissions, or the criminalization of certain groups, the talent of athletes is witnessed and judged in huge arenas and open fields. Every step they take is closely watched by the public, analyzed through high-speed and rewindable motion pictures, and monitored by highly trained officials safeguarding their professional standing. This transparent and rigorous process ensures that the true measure of an athlete’s capability is recognized and rewarded. In most of the cases, type-casting certain ethnic groups or place affinity is becoming a relic of the past, as minority groups are excelling and dominating in non-traditional sports previously dominated by specific demographics. This shift not only breaks down outdated stereotypes but also promotes equity by providing opportunities for all athletes, regardless of their background. The diversity and talent we see today in professional sports stands as a testament to the power of meritocracy and the importance of equity, inspiring a future where talent and dedication are the only criteria for success. Meritocracy advocates must understand the need for integrity, accountability, and just systems in providing opportunities and delivering fair and just decisions to all. 🚦Note of Caution: I'm ONLY referring to professional athletes and not the entirety of sports, club ownership and leadership, and businesses opportunities built around it.🛑

Paris Olympics: Here’s How Much Team USA Gold Medal Winners Will Earn The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee rewards gold medalists $37,500, while silver medalists make a cool $22,500 and bronze medalists win $15,000. That’s far less than athletes from some other countries would take home, with gold medal winners from Malaysia earning roughly $236,000, winners from Kazakhstan making $250,000 and winning athletes from Singapore making roughly $737,000, according to a 2021 CNBC report Meanwhile, gold-medal winning Track and Field athletes will make an additional $50,000 from World Athletics, the international governing body for track events.

'In the process of announcing this new bold move, Lord Coe pointed out its greatest flaw: you can’t put a price on an Olympic gold medal. By the end of the press release, he had. It’s fair to say that the Olympic philosophy is not in a good shape – but is that a reason to give up altogether on the idea of strong social values? To abandon that long-standing, beautiful glimpse of a rare equality in sport and life where a shooting gold medal, a rowing gold medal and a 100m gold are all worth the same.' I think there are really serious, long-term implications for the decision by World Athletics to award $50,000 to the winners of track and field events in Paris 2024 and ripples that will be felt adversely far and wide across sport and society beyond the Olympics. Strong views have been voiced so far across media coverage of this issue. I think it's important to consider this move from multiple perspectives and to think about the potential long-term impact. I felt it needed exploring further... #values #olympics #meaning #purpose #whatpricewinning #success #costofsuccess #redefinesuccess #socialimpact #shortwins #longwins #longtermthinking #impact #culture #culturematters #whobenefits #leadership #impact #change #callitout

🏅🌟 Celebrating $50,000 Prize Money for Track and Field Athletes at Paris Olympics! 🌟🏅 Exciting news for the world of athletics! World Athletics have announced a significant milestone - $50,000 in prize money for track and field athletes that bring home a Gold Medal from Paris! This is a fantastic recognition of the incredible dedication, talent, and hard work that these athletes pour into their craft. 🎉💪 However, as we celebrate this remarkable achievement, it's important to raise an equally significant question: will Para athletes receive this same level of recognition and support? In striving for equality and inclusivity, it's crucial that all athletes, regardless of their abilities, are afforded the same opportunities and rewards for their achievements. Furthermore, while this prize money is undoubtedly a step in the right direction, it also underscores the pressing need to invest in our athletes at an earlier stage of their journey in order to retain and develop top talent. We must ensure that aspiring athletes have access to the resources, training, and support they need from the grassroots level onward. By doing so, we can nurture talent, cultivate potential, and ultimately keep our athletes engaged and thriving in the sport. Let's use this moment to not only celebrate this wonderful step but to also together create a sporting landscape where every athlete has the opportunity to shine. 💫🌍 #ParisOlympics #Athletics #Inclusivity #InvestInAthletes #athletics #prizemoney #invest #celebration #history #gold Athletics Australia #inclusion #opportunity #enablement #olympics #paris2024 #talent #retention #recognition #sport #athletes #enablement #grassroots #announcement #invest Source: NPR

Started out with an idea of what I thought I wanted to write about for this week and ended up doing something totally different. The topic of inequality in the Paralympics speaks to the broader, nonsensical impact of having a narrow view of sport (traditionally able-bodied men). As we strive to bolster diversity in the industry, we have to address where and how we need to improve. I personally learned a lot in writing this newsletter, and hope that it prompts reflection in each of us. Admittedly, this is a topic that I am relatively new to and realize I have so much more to learn to effectively advocate for these athletes and the unique struggles they face. If you’re knowledgeable in this area, I would love to set up some time to chat to dive deeper.

Track & field become first sport to pay prize money at Paris Olympics 2024s' gold medalists $50,000. Excerpts: 1) The governing body of athletics has allocated $2.4 million to reward gold medalists across the 48 men’s, women’s, and mixed events in the track and field program for this year’s Paris Olympics. Relay teams will also share the prize money among their members. 2) Silver and bronze medalists are also set to receive monetary recognition, starting from the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. Personally, I feel: 1) It would bring in more youth to participate in this sport. 2) More employment opportunities for Coaches/ PETs'. 3) Other Sport might experience similar initiatives sooner or later. 🏅💰 World Athletics introduce $50,000 Prize for Gold Medalists 💰🏅 This news that came out last week, marks a significant milestone in the world of Olympic sports (with plans to extend this to silver and bronze medalists in LA 2028). This move is not only a game-changer for individual athletes but also sets a precedent that could impact the wider Olympic movement. It addresses a longstanding concern about financial support for athletes, acknowledging the immense dedication and sacrifices they make in pursuit of excellence. As someone frequently approached about athlete funding, I understand the challenges faced by International Federations, National Olympic Committees, and Governing Bodies in allocating limited resources while striving to meet ambitious targets. So I applaud World Athletics' decision to do this, providing well-deserved support that can aid athletes all year round. But what does this mean for African athletes? ▶ Increased Financial Support: African gold medalists will see a substantial boost in their earnings, providing financial security and recognition for their hard work and talent. ▶ Retention of Talent: The introduction of substantial prize money could potentially stem the tide of African athletes switching allegiances to represent other nations, often due to financial constraints. This could lead to greater continuity and loyalty within African national teams. ▶ Enhanced Training Opportunities: With more resources at their disposal, African athletes can invest in better training facilities, coaching, and support staff, ultimately improving their performance on the global stage. What impact would this have across other Olympic Sports? Well, only time will tell. Between 2017 - 2021 International Olympic Committee – IOC made $7.6bn in revenue from the Olympic Games with 90% being redistributed back into sports. This development highlights the evolving landscape of Olympic Sports. Lessons in Life and Sports In the 1936 Berlin Olympics, USA athlete, Jesse Owens won 4 gold medals in track and field, the 100m, 200m, long jump and 4x100. He had help from an unlikely opponent, German Carl “Luz” Long during the long jump. Luz gave a technique suggestion to Jesse to avoid being fouled a 3rd time, in front of Adolf Hitler…Jesse listened and won the gold. Liz won silver. A remarkable friendship ensued against all odds. L&S Points 1. No matter where we are in life and sports we can learn. Sometimes extraordinary results can occur. 2. Friendships arise from the most unique circumstances. Be open. 3. Willingness to pour into others comes back tenfold. 4. Choosing to talk with others from varying cultures and beliefs can expand our knowledge, and make the world a better place. See the below article with more interesting info from the #1936Olympics. We also recently watched the “Race” on Netflix based on the true story of Jesse Owens. Highly recommend. https://lnkd.in/eGXun4kE #lifeandsports #coach #coachability #strengthandconditioning #diversity #sports #Olympics #JesseOwens

This article beautifully captures why athletes play the game. Every time an athlete takes to the field or pool, they risk the prospect of losing. In this moment, much is learned as it encapsultes this is a chosen endeavor; one which leads the athlete to understand “it will hurt exactly as much as it is worth.” Personal betterment comes from what we learn in these moments of defeat. As uncomfortable as it can be, losing teaches personal growth and the resolve to get up and do it even better again.
The 2024 Summer Olympic Games produced an exorbitant number of one category of athlete: losers. All told, Paris sent home nearly 10,000 losers. Sports are a uniquely unforgiving institution. It’s all designed so a large majority of participants lose their final competition and many more along the way. From youth sports leagues through amateur and professional ranks, there’s only one ultimate winner: everyone else finishes their season with a loss—and some fail to even qualify—and many athletes lose more than they win throughout a season.
