New year, new research from Stonehaven - this time looking at the take up of electric vehicles and what stands in the way of speeding it up. Another great report from my colleague Michael Dnes. TLDR: it’s the cost, stupid. But more specially it’s inequities re charging points. “While generation one of EV policy proved electric vehicles could work, it made no systematic effort to deal with the situations where take-up was harder… The challenge for policymakers has changed. It is no longer a matter of making the first electric cars succeed. Instead it is about making the average car electric, in a way that is simple and persuasive to average households.” To find out more about our research into policy and public opinion on EVs, please get in touch!

Europe is well on its way to electrification, with Norway now targeting laggards, Iceland in the late majority; and Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and The Netherlands in the solid early majority of their adoption curves. There are those who have now leapt the chasm and have a toehold in the early majority, with between 17 and 20% of sales being EVs. This includes France, Germany and the UK, as well as Portugal, Austria, Ireland and Malta. Despite this, several non-European markets with lower EV uptake have higher EV sales volume by virtue of their size. Really interesting research. Part of the reason I chose to get an electric car was because I moved into a house with a charging point - not sure I'd have done so otherwise
