The real prize lies in the $500 billion still wagered illegally. The industry is transitioning from bookies to legal platforms like BetMGM and DraftKings, driving massive growth. U.S. Representative Paul Tonko and Senator Richard Blumenthal have renewed their push to bring nationwide regulation to sports betting through the Supporting Affordability and Fairness with Every Bet (SAFE Bet) Act. The proposed legislation aims to establish a federal standard for gaming operators, framing sports betting as a public health crisis, and targeting three key areas of regulation: (1) advertising, (2) affordability, and (3) artificial intelligence. When the Supreme Court opened the door for legalized sports betting in 2018, it sparked an explosion of gambling platforms and partnerships with major sports leagues. Today, betting is woven into the fabric of sports culture—but at what cost? I’m honored to join NPR’s Open to Debate to explore this critical question: Has legalizing sports gambling become a bad bet? We’ll dive into the realities behind the glitz and glamor of legalized sports gambling: - The normalization of gambling in everyday life, especially for young people. - The alarming rise in gambling addiction and its devastating ripple effects on individuals, families, and communities. - The blurred lines between sports and gambling—and the risks to the integrity of the games we love. DraftKings Inc. has made the right call by reversing its proposed gaming tax surcharge. Definitely a win for players! Business pressures aside, taxing winners based on fairly arbitrary location conditions always felt unfair, but I don’t envisage this doing any long-term brand damage now it's been sorted. Price sensitive bettors who may have been put off are already fairly elastic in their sportsbook choices, while it’s hard to imagine that the more recreational players - DraftKings core audience - will put too much weight on this as a trade story. #draftkings #usabetting #sportsbetting #igamingmarketing
