Get to Know Your Students- By Margherita Miserandino, MA CCC-SLP Lead Speech-Language Pathologist Getting to know your students is crucial for their success and overall well-being. Start by asking questions about their likes and dislikes, as students perform better when they feel heard and understood. This approach builds rapport and helps you identify their learning styles and emotional cues. When you notice a student looks upset, engaging them by asking how they feel and offering a space to talk about it if they wish is important. Additionally, showing genuine interest in their lives fosters a supportive therapeutic environment, encouraging students to be more open and communicative. This level of attention and care can significantly enhance their educational experience and contribute to a positive and productive learning atmosphere. #StudentSuccess #SLP #SpeechTherapy #EducationalSuccess #StudentEngagement #LearningStyles #TherapeuticEnvironment #StudentWellbeing #EducationMatters

I’m posting this technical report from ASHA (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association). I hope School Administrators will take time to review it. Speech Language Specialists (SLS) in schools wear many hats and having a private room to do this work is critical for many reasons. Confidentiality is one reason but efficiency is another. I am hearing more and more that SLS’s in schools are losing that space. This technical report explains all the reasons why this is not the best choice. If you are an administrator and are thinking about making room changes that impact your SLS, please consider reading this first. #SLS #schoolbasedSLP #schooladministrator #boe #specialeducation

Are you a speech pathologist working in education, or with a clinical focus on language and literacy, looking for professional supervision as the work year starts? If so, I am looking to take on some motivated supervisees for 2025 😊 I have clinical, leadership and supervisor experience across early childhood, primary and secondary settings, and have spent the last two years in a research and teaching role at La Trobe University's highly regarded Science of Language and Reading Lab. Maybe you're wondering: - how can I make sense of my role in a school/education sitting? - how can I position my role within a Multi Tiered Systems of Support framework? - how can I ensure my school is systematically and efficiently identifying children with speech, language and communication support needs? - what interventions are effective in an educational setting? - how can I link my supports back in to the curriculum? - how do I navigate a complex school setting? If these are the types of big questions ❓ and big ideas💡 you have, then drop me a message and we can have a chat about how we could work together in a way that works for you 🤗

𝙿𝚕𝚊𝚢𝚏𝚞𝚕 𝙲𝚘𝚗𝚗𝚎𝚌𝚝𝚒𝚘𝚗𝚜: 𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝙼𝚊𝚐𝚒𝚌 𝚘𝚏 𝙲𝚑𝚒𝚕𝚍-𝙵𝚛𝚒𝚎𝚗𝚍𝚕𝚢 𝚂𝚙𝚎𝚎𝚌𝚑 𝚃𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚊𝚙𝚢 Speech therapy is more than just a profession – it’s a commitment that requires patience, creativity, and genuine dedication. For a speech-language pathologist (SLP), it’s essential to take on the role of a parent or peer when working with children who have communication difficulties. Strict and overly structured teaching methods can often make therapy sessions boring and frustrating for young children. Instead, adopting a playful and flexible approach is far more effective. Particularly for children under the age of four, avoid giving instructions or commands in a formal, teaching style. Engage with them as a friend during therapy sessions – play, laugh, and connect with them on their level. This not only keeps the child motivated but also creates a positive and relaxed learning environment. When children feel safe and happy, their communication skills develop naturally and effortlessly. The key is to make therapy feel like playtime. You’ll be amazed at the progress they can make when they’re having fun!

📖 READING WITH THE RESCUES 📖 RWR is a program that pairs a certified speech pathologist with special needs children to target language, literacy, and other social skills. Social and self-care skills training is also used to increase fine motor mobility, agility, and core strengthening for participants. It will include interacting with mini and full-size horses to increase motivation and sensory input, and decrease stress. Recommended for 4-10-year-olds but could be modified for older students with high support needs/lower communication if needed. #readingwithrescues #faithnfriends #equinetherapy

Let me tell you what. Some days our jobs as pediatric Speech-Language Pathologists are hard. We wear many hats and often navigate difficult conversations with families, teachers, colleagues, and other disciplines. This week I was faced with one of those Really Hard Convos...you know the ones. The ones where you feel like maybe it's just not sticking or that maybe it's time to raise a white flag on the multidisciplinary collaboration boat. But then! Then you sleep on it. You exercise. You eat some chocolate. You drink water. You let a kiddo tell you all about the things he loves about the McCormick spice aisle. You let him use his speech generating device to describe the shape of the bottle and the placement of the letters. You program his favorite spices into his device so he can talk about it whenever he wants....and you remember why you're here and why the tough days and the tough conversations are worth it. Because his voice is worth it. Her voice is worth it. Their voices are worth it. My voice is worth it. #slp #aac #communication #augmentativealternativecommunication #autism #asd #neurodiversity #collaboration #multidisciplinaryapproach #worktogether #language #speech #aba #ot #pt
