What if your aversion to giving feedback is keeping YOU stuck? Feedback is HARD, I know. You're not alone in feeling that way. It's understandable if your only experience of getting or giving feedback has been awkward and embarrassing. What's also true though is that if you head into it thinking it's going to be hard, it will be. But here's the thing: reframing that is easier than you'd think. When you give feedback that's specific and relates to where your team members are and where they can get to, the experience no longer feels awkward. It feels encouraging and supportive. It's easier for you to give and for them to receive AND act on. The truth is, when you can do feedback well, everyone benefits. How much time have I wasted telling and training managers about the importance of giving feedback? It should not occur only when someone reaches the advanced stages of their career. Instead, it should be the first skill you learn when entering the world of work and should be ingrained in every induction process. Imagine how great workplaces would be if every team member could give professional, honest, and unsolicited feedback. As a by-product, every manager would spend their entire career learning how to receive it.

One of the biggest challenges of starting any career..... Learning how to receive feedback. If someone never offers feedback or only provides vague praise without specifics, it’s something to approach with caution. A lack of honest critique, or any critique at all, might mean you’re missing opportunities to learn and improve. The key to becoming comfortable with feedback is exposure. Actively seek it from your supervisors, and view each interaction as a chance to improve your skills. The more you practice receiving and applying feedback, the more natural it becomes.
