Yesterday and today I attended the Automotive Symposium organized by Würth Group in Bad Mergentheim. thanks to the team of Würth Group. Great and inspiring presentation by Dr. Ulf Zillig, Dr. Philipp Haaf, Dr. Felix Stracke, Beatrix C. Keim, Christian Wiegand. E-Mobility is the main focus of Automotive industry and new governmental regulations and industrial effort are needed to speed up the development. Main question will be, can Germany and European Union reach 2030 targets of electric vehicles?

Automotive lightweighting is primarily achieved through the adoption of new materials, new processes, and optimized structural designs. Its classification is mainly based on the technologies and methods used. In the 1970s, after the first oil crisis, automotive lightweighting began to be taken seriously as manufacturers sought to reduce vehicle weight to improve fuel efficiency. From 2020 to the present day, automotive lightweighting has been involved in all aspects of the entire vehicle, including the body, chassis, powertrain, etc. Additionally, the wave of electrification has brought new challenges and opportunities for lightweighting, especially in the design and material selection of battery packs. The upstream area of automotive lightweighting mainly includes the production and supply of lightweight materials, such as high-strength steels, aluminum alloys, magnesium alloys, and carbon fiber composites. These material suppliers usually work closely with automotive component manufacturers to develop high-performance materials suitable for automotive lightweighting. The downstream application industries of automotive lightweighting are extensive, covering the entire automotive manufacturing industry. From body structure, chassis, powertrain to interior and exterior components, the application of lightweighting technology can be seen. In 2021, Bosch completed its acquisition of Protec Fire and Security Group, one of the UK’s largest system integrators for fire detection and security technology. This move has played a pivotal role in Bosch’s growth strategy, helping consolidate our product and service portfolio in the Energy and Building Technologies sector. Earlier this week, Dr. Steffen Hoffmann along with Jonathan Burton and Martina McGrath visited Protec’s headquarters in Nelson, Lancashire. The visit included an exchange of business updates with Protec's leadership team as well as a tour of their state-of-the-art development and manufacturing center.
