Fraction basics
- [Instructor] So now, let's cover some basics regarding fractions, including mixed numbers, improper fractions, and the very important skill of converting between fractions, decimals and percents. Let's start off with the basic fraction like 1/2. That's just showing us that it's one half of a whole, like if we had a pie and we divided it up into two. That would be the fraction of the pie that maybe we ate, or we had or something like that. So what are mixed numbers? Mixed numbers are when we have a number like 3 2/3, which is just basically saying that we have three plus 2/3, so just another way to represent how much we have. Now if we had an improper fraction, we can convert a mixed number into an improper fraction. Let's look at our 3 2/3 over here. The way that we convert it into an improper fraction is we multiply this number by this number, so three times three is nine, right? Then we add the number up on top. So nine plus two is eleven.
