- [Host] Let's explore some other essential concepts and terms you need to know with some others that are useful to know. Let's start with the basics. The first character here is in uppercase, commonly known as capitals or caps, and that's followed by some lowercase characters. There are also variations for numbers or numerals as they're known in the language of type in two forms, old style numerals that tend to give a more harmonious appearance when used within blocks of paragraph text and lining numerals that are better for tabulated text. Note that not every font has the old style variations. Mostly ones designed for paragraphs of body text are where there to be found. Type is designed using construction lines, and the foundation for all typeface is the baseline. We don't normally see it except in some graphics programs, but it's always there.
