Design exploration with sketching
- Sketching whether analog or digital, is the exploration of your idea, which is a three dimensional form, but then translated back into 2D. Even with 3D modeling, sketching is still the most effective and speedy way to generate ideas, both good and bad. And that's an important point, if you don't produce enough bad solutions you'll never know if the one you selected was your best effort, especially if you stop early or run out of time. So for me, it's a process of quantity in search of quality. We just saw an architectural sketch with time-lapse and now a page full of perfectly space doodles, that's mostly how it's done in the movies. The real process is very messy and can even vary from project to project, but done efficiently there should always be a constant flow back and forth between design, the research and the development. It's a visual and functional aider of process which is propelled by thinking and sketching. Now I know that sounds a little wordy, so here's an analogy, or…
