How does Firefly differ from other generative art solutions?
- [Instructor] Let's take a moment to talk about what makes Adobe Firefly unique. Now, first of all, Firefly is integrated within your existing Creative Cloud applications, so you can use your familiar user interface, like Photoshop and Illustrator, to use specific Firefly functionalities without having to leave the application, which can be a massive production booster. The second reason why it's unique is because of how Firefly was created. Adobe put out a very bold statement, saying that Firefly is designed to be commercially safe. So this means that if you're looking to use Firefly to generate an image, then you can just go ahead and do so and use that image commercially. And the reason why is because of the database, the algorithm that's fueling the Adobe Firefly experience because it's based on three things. The first one is the Adobe Stock database. So this is Adobe's own stock service that feeds about 400 million images to Adobe Firefly to help train and maintain the algorithm. And these images have already been curated when they were initially submitted to the Adobe Stock Service. Secondly, images available within the public space on the internet are also used for training. So these are images where there's no copyright in the first place. And then thirdly, images of which the copyright has expired, and this gives you a very, very decent database to work with to create images that are free from royalties and free from copyright. Now, there's also a whole conversation about the relationship between using generative AI technology, and then harm and bias towards ethnic groups and other genders, so let me give you an example. If you're looking to create an image of a nurse tending to a patient, will that nurse always be a woman? Or how about you wanting to create an image that involves religion? Which religion will be picked by Firefly? And there's just a whole variety of conversations that you can have around this, but Adobe has trained Firefly in such a way that there is, well, there should be more than enough diversity if you're looking at the results of specific images. So let's take a look at just a couple of examples here of how Firefly is helping you keep these images commercially safe. Now, the first one, I typed in the prompt, "Superman flying through the sky with a city in the background." And then, obviously, I'm referring to the Superman. However, the result I'm getting is this, and I have to say, initially, this result got flagged by the Adobe Firefly Services because I was using the term Superman, which is a copyrighted character, and Firefly was blocking me from trying to create Superman images, so I had to rephrase this a little bit, and I basically said I want to have a superhero flying through the sky, and obviously, because it's a little bit cliche, the superhero was automatically getting a red cape. Let's look at a second example, Here, I typed in, "A Van Gogh style painting featuring beautiful, green fields, cows, and the blue sky." So the prompt concept remains, if you look at the results here, but there are no real references to real artists or the visual style inside of Adobe Firefly. Now, you do have ways of bringing your own visual style references if you want, and you'll learn all about that later in this course, but just know that we're not specifically looking at images that are exact copies of a Van Gogh style, or any other famous painter for that matter. And then lastly, I tried this one, "Disney's Mickey Mouse performing a magic spell." This also got flagged and I wasn't even able to create or use any of the Disney character names because this is intellectual property, so Firefly is shielding me from using those specific characters. Instead, I had to reside to using a simple mouse performing a magic spell, so I have to change how I prompt things, and it's important that you realize how Firefly is basically trained and maintained just to match expectations about what is that you want to do and what is that you want to create. So if you want to create celebrities in various poses or in fancy, fast cars and other types of scenes, then Firefly is probably not the solution for you, because it's really difficult to depict real people and real intellectual property products and characters.
