Description

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Utilizes extensive knowledge of microbiology, chemistry, and food engineering to improve manufacturing processes and eliminate or reduce contamination to acceptable levels in raw materials and/or finished goods.
  • Builds relationships with suppliers from around the world to solve problems relating to microbiological, chemical, physical, and/or other forms of contamination found in food ingredients and dietary supplements.
  • Works closely with Purchasing, Quality Control, Quality Assurance, Operations, and all other departments involved with reviewing, evaluating and/or processing raw materials used for NOW Domestic brands, NOW International, NOW Canada, Protocol, Private Label and other brands offered by NOW Health Group.
  • Provides leadership role in identifying contamination within food ingredients and dietary supplements, determining solutions, and implementing actionable recommendations through process improvements.
  • Works closely with vendors and/or NOW manufacturing in designing process simulations, developing Process Flow Diagrams, and providing technical expertise throughout project implementation.
  • Remains current with industry, governmental, media, third party agencies, and other organizations defining acceptable/unacceptable levels of impurities or contamination found in food ingredients and dietary supplements.
  • Complies with safety and GMP requirements.

EDUCATION And/or EXPERIENCE

B.S. in Food Science, Food Engineering, Chemical Engineering or other related degree and a minimum of five years’ experience in food processing engineering in a food manufacturing environment required. M.S. preferred.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY

Excellent Problem Solving Skills Required.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Excellent time management, attention to detail, verbal and written communication skills, listening, decision-making, and organization skills required. Excellent computer skills required, including Microsoft Word and Excel skills.

Displays thorough knowledge of the interrelationship of product, process, and packaging.

The employee is frequently exposed to vapors and/or herbal aromas. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee may be exposed to potentially hazardous chemicals and biological materials.

This position works in all areas of NOW’s manufacturing facilities with direct exposure to ingredients (powders and liquids), mixes (powders and liquids), equipment, and packaging.
