The City of Stockton is seeking to fill two (2) Mechanic II (Light) vacancies . Under general supervision, this is a journey-level position in the Fleet section of the Public Works Department that maintains and repairs a wide variety of vehicles. As a Mechanic II (Light), you'll be responsible for maintaining and repairing a wide variety of vehicles, including sedans, light and medium trucks. You’ll bring your expertise to the table, ensuring the fleet stays in top shape and runs smoothly for the City’s public works operations. The ideal candidate will be experienced in reading and interpreting vehicle schematics and wiring diagrams, with a solid foundation in general vehicle repair.

The incumbent will work a City of Stockton 9/80 schedule: 6:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Fridays, with every other Friday off. The incumbent in this position must be able and willing to work evening, night and/or weekend shifts if needed.

Incumbents in this position are included in the Civil Service system, in a "for-cause" employment status, and are represented by Operating Engineers' Local 3 Trades and Maintenance Unit (Classified/Represented).

This recruitment is being conducted as an Open/Promotional recruitment. Current full-time City of Stockton employees may apply for this position as a promotional opportunity and successful candidates will be placed on a promotional list. All other candidates may apply for this position as an open competitive opportunity and successful candidates will be placed on an open list. The appointing authority will have the option of requesting names from the promotional list or a combination of both.

This list may be used to fill future vacancies.

Prior to appointment, eligible candidates will be required to submit and successfully pass a background investigation, which will include fingerprinting and a medical examination which includes a back evaluation.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is a skilled, journey-level class capable of diagnosing, maintaining, installing, modifying, and repairing all automotive and light truck equipment, including simple hydraulic systems, with minimal supervision. It is distinguished from Mechanic III (Light), in which incumbents act as lead employees over a group that may include Mechanics I and/or II (Light). This class is distinguished from the Heavy Equipment Mechanic class series in that the Light Equipment Mechanic series does not require a Class A California driver’s license and does not work on vehicles that may have air brakes and/or require extensive welding and fabrication skills.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES (Illustrative Only)

  • Diagnoses, troubleshoots, inspects, and repairs automotive and light truck systems and subsystems, including simple hydraulic systems. The majority of the work (approximately 80%) relates to preventative maintenance inspection in the following areas:
    • Engine repair
    • Automatic transmission/transaxle
    • Manual drive train and axles
    • Suspension and steering
    • Brakes
    • Electrical/electronic systems
    • Heating and air conditioning
    • Engine performance and driveability
  • Installs, modifies, and repairs a wide variety of gasoline, alternatively fueled, and diesel-powered vehicles and related equipment used by City departments.
  • Reads and interprets schematics, shop manuals, and plans in performing work assignments.
  • Operates a variety of hand, power, and shop tools.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of electrical/electronic instruments and diagnostic equipment, including diagnostic scopes, gas analyzers, dynamometers, and multimeters.
  • Utilizes personal computers to download manufacturers’ recommended software and searches the Internet for resources related to the work.
  • Completes a variety of written reports related to the work.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education/Experience

Possession of a high school diploma or GED AND one of the following:

Four (4) years of experience with the City of Stockton as a Mechanic I,

OR

Successful completion of a recognized four-year apprenticeship program in automotive repair,

OR

Four (4) years of experience at an automotive repair shop, at a level equivalent to the City of Stockton Mechanic I,

OR

Successful completion of an accredited college automotive program or trade school program and two (2) years of experience at a level equivalent to the City of Stockton Mechanic I class.

Other Requirements

  • Must possess a valid California Class C driver’s license.
  • Must possess the physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the job, including sufficient strength and stamina to lift and remove or install parts weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able and willing to work evening, night, and/or weekend shifts.

Knowledge Of

  • Methods, techniques, parts, tools, and materials used in maintaining and repairing a wide variety of motorized vehicles and equipment and their related systems and components, including simple hydraulic systems;
  • Simple and complex automotive diagnostic equipment;
  • Hand, power, and shop tools and electrical/electronic instruments (such as diagnostic scopes, gas analyzers, dynamometers, multimeters, etc.) commonly used in the trade;
  • Shop mathematics;
  • Personal computers and the Internet;
  • Occupational hazards and safe work practices, methods, and regulations relating to the repair of fleet vehicles and equipment.

Skill In

  • Diagnosing, maintaining, installing, modifying, and repairing a wide variety of small gasoline, alternatively fueled, and diesel-powered vehicles and related equipment used by City departments;
  • Operating and maintaining a variety of hand and power tools and electrical/electronic instruments (such as diagnostic equipment, etc.);
  • Using the Internet as an information resource;
  • Reading and interpreting manuals, specifications, and drawings;
  • Understanding and applying shop mathematics;
  • Understanding and following written and oral instructions; Exercising independent judgment and initiative without close supervision;
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work;
  • Working both independently and within a group to deliver products that may require both environments to complete.

The Examination

Applicants who qualify in terms of relevant work experience and education, that best fit the needs of the City, will be invited to participate in the examination process. The examination process may include an oral or a written examination weighted 100%. However, the City reserves the right to utilize alternative testing methods if deemed necessary. Candidates must receive a minimum passing score of 70%, as determined by the relative performance of all candidates in all portions of the examination. In the event of identical ratings, candidates' names will be arranged in order of application date/time, and, if the same, then arranged alphabetically.
