GEICO is seeking an experienced Manager, Staff Engineering to lead our SEO Engineering efforts within the MarTech organization. We're looking for someone passionate about building high-performance, low-latency platforms that power content discoverability and search engine rankings at scale. You will manage a team of engineers focused on delivering enterprise-wide SEO capabilities—such as structured data pipelines, site indexing optimization, and web performance enhancements—ensuring our content is fast, crawlable, and relevant.

Position Description

Our Manager, Staff Engineering in SEO is an engineering leader who plays a key role in driving our business transformation by enabling organic traffic growth through technical SEO excellence. This includes partnering closely with product, marketing, and content teams to translate SEO best practices into scalable engineering solutions—all while co-creating a culture of psychological safety and continuous improvement.

Position Responsibilities

As a Manager, Staff Engineering, you will:

  • Drive the technical vision and roadmap for SEO infrastructure, including crawlability, indexing, and page performance.
  • Partner with marketing and content teams to translate SEO strategies into engineering deliverables.
  • Design and maintain internal tools and platforms to measure, test, and optimize SEO effectiveness at scale.
  • Ensure engineering best practices align with search engine requirements and evolving algorithms (Google, Bing, etc.).
  • Identify and resolve technical SEO issues through code audits, automation, and developer education.
  • Report on engineering impact to organic traffic, discoverability metrics, and search performance KPIs.
  • Champion accessibility, page performance, and structured content as part of the overall SEO strategy.
  • Initiate and support performance evaluation of team members
  • Influence those you motivate and coach to be receptive to feedback by cultivating a culture that acknowledges and expects individuals to grow and be accountable as a result of the experience gained (growth mindset)
  • Identify where technical or analytical skill gaps put future team deliverables at risk and craft a plan to remediate, consistently challenge team members to share knowledge and learn new technologies
  • Proficiently execute difficult conversations on development and performance
  • Craft and deliver strategic and well-structured persuasive arguments to drive projects that drive process improvement, enhance cost leadership, and/or customer experience
  • Significantly contribute to the team planning process to include surfacing associate level proposals

Qualifications

  • Strong foundation in algorithms, data structures, and core computer science concepts
  • Fluency with HTML5, JavaScript/TypeScript, JSON, and structured markup (e.g., schema.org, Open Graph) for SEO purposes.
  • Expertise with at least one modern language such as Python, Java, Go and experience with open-source software is a big plus.
  • Constructing, interpreting, and applying metrics to your work and decision making, able to use those metrics to identify correlation between drivers and results, and using that information to drive prioritization and action
  • Strong foundation in algorithms, data structures, and relevance ranking algorithms used in search and discovery platforms.
  • Experience working with search engines (e.g., Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, Solr) and web crawlers.
  • Understanding of SEO performance metrics (Core Web Vitals, page speed, crawl depth) and strategies to improve them via engineering.
  • Proven ability to design scalable pipelines for content indexing, sitemaps, and link management.
  • Knowledge of SEO testing techniques such as SEO A/B testing and experiment frameworks.
  • Experience with cloud-based hosting and CDNs, and how deployment infrastructure impacts SEO (e.g., edge rendering, caching strategies).

Bonus Points For

  • Experience with React, PHP, and graphQL
  • Knowledge of DTM tagging, including implementation solution design and processing rule set

Experience

  • 6+ years coding experience
  • 5+ years of development in a large-scale, mission-critical environment
  • 5+ years of hands-on work experience supervising personnel in a technical environment
  • 2+ years of experience with automated testing including Unit, Integration, and End-to-End functional testing

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology or related field, or equivalent experience

Annual Salary

$130,000.00 - $260,000.00

The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate’s work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
