Engineer I, Water Production

The Lansing Board of Water & Light has openings for an Engineer I in our Water Production Department located in Lansing, MI.

Job Type: Full-Time

Starting Salary Range: $66,927. - $79,643.

Position Summary

Responsible for engineering activities related to planning, designing, constructing, operating, maintaining, and ensuring regulatory compliance of water treatment facilities. Typical projects will involve some or all of the following activities: process review and optimization, facility planning, project estimating, economic evaluations, budgeting, scheduling, design engineering, drawing development and review, construction and commissioning support, compliance monitoring, reporting, training, and project management.

Primary roles of the Water Production Engineer include water treatment facility operations, process optimization, monitoring equipment utilization and assisting in prioritization of equipment maintenance, regulatory compliance, asset management, capital planning, and project management related duties. This position will work closely with the Water Production Manager, Water Production Engineer, and Strategic Planning Engineer.

Essential Functions

  • Acquires limited knowledge and develops basic skills; develops an understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities.
  • Applies prescribed techniques and procedures in accordance with established criteria to perform assigned tasks; performs standard computations or analysis.
  • Performs routine technical work which does not require previous experience.
  • Collects data and gathers information or documents related to water treatment processes and system performance.
  • Prepares reports, charts, and visual aids to support engineering and operational decisions.
  • Assists with regulatory compliance reporting, including water quality analysis.
  • Supports operational staff in troubleshooting treatment processes and optimizing plant performance.
  • Observes and documents plant construction and maintenance activities.
  • Creates a generative safety culture, remaining aware of potential risks and threats in the workplace.
  • Exhibits strong drive for results and success; conveys a sense of urgency and drives issues to closure; persists despite obstacles and opposition.
  • Acts and makes decisions in a manner consistent with the needs of the public in the delivery of clean and safe drinking water.
  • Exchanges thoughts, feelings, and information effectively.
  • Participates in the continuous improvement of the Asset Management System and Work Management processes.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Required

Job Specifications:

  • Bachelor of Science from an ABET accredited program, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Candidates within nine (9) months of completing their Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree will be considered
  • Ability to effectively communicate in writing and verbally
  • Predictable and reliable work schedule
  • Comply with all BWL policies and work rules
  • Ability to respond to emergent or unexpected events within the BWL service territory
  • Ability to effectively work in remote and open-office environments
  • Michigan driver's license with an acceptable driving record

Preferred

  • Internship, co-op, or volunteer experience in water utilities, engineering firms, or related industries. Hands-on exposure to water treatment plant operations, including an understanding of treatment-distribution integration.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings
  • Fundamentals of Engineer (FE) certification.
  • Basic experience with Office 365 applications (e.g. MS Word, MS Excel, MS Teams, MS Outlook)
  • Applicable utility experience or other relevant project experience
  • Awareness of applicable codes, regulations, and industry standards related to drinking water treatment.

Physical Requirements / Working Conditions

Must be able to remain in a stationary position for much of the working day. The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office environment including the use of stairs. Constantly operates a computer, and other office equipment. Ability to adjust focus, especially due to concentration on a computer screen. Must communicate frequently with other departments and employees both verbally and in writing. May need to lift and carry up to 30 pounds and/or position the body to reach items on the floor/below knee level or reach overhead. The person in this position needs to occasionally move about in industrial environments, and uneven terrain. May be required to recognize small numbers, letters, symbols, colors on prints, and/or operate field instruments/equipment.

Works in temperature-controlled office environment, with occasional work in outdoor weather conditions, and in industrial environments.

Must successfully complete a background check, a substance screening and a physical (if applicable).
