A typical day might include:
- Ensuring financial operations run with precision and purpose. You're overseeing the day-to-day accounting functions - including accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, and monthly close - bringing structure, consistency, and integrity to every detail so the organization can move forward with confidence
- Translating complexity into clarity. You're reviewing the monthly close process and preparing GAAP-compliant financial statements, ensuring the details are solid while surfacing strategic insights that help teams make informed, mission-aligned decisions
- Serving as a trusted partner. You're collaborating with colleagues across teams/departments, making funder requirements less intimidating, bringing clarity to budgets, and helping teams feel confident about the numbers behind their work
- Improving systems with purpose. You're working cross-functionally to scope improvements to accounting systems and tools - maybe optimizing workflows or leading an automation project to make processes faster, smoother, and more reliable
- Leading with precision and grace. You're coordinating with auditors to ensure a seamless audit process, staying several steps ahead on documentation, timelines, and communication - because you know that compliance can be rigorous yet collaborative
- Strengthening internal safeguards. You're reviewing and refining financial policies and internal controls, striking a thoughtful balance between risk mitigation and organizational flexibility
- Making finance accessible. You're meeting with department leads to review forecasts, explain variances, and offer guidance - all in plain language that helps non-finance colleagues feel empowered to lead their budgets with confidence
- Ensuring integrity across funds. You're overseeing grant and restricted fund accounting, ensuring compliance and accuracy, while helping tell a clear financial story to funders
- Thinking like a builder. You're identifying areas where processes, systems, or structures need to evolve - and proposing thoughtful, scalable solutions to help finance better serve the mission
- Building team capacity. You're mentoring a team member through a challenge, celebrating a recent win, and identifying new opportunities for growth - because investing in your team's development is central to how you lead
Essential Qualifications
- Mission & Values Alignment. You are inspired by the WorkMoney mission and are passionate about advancing economic fairness and opportunity. You are deeply committed to meaningfully improving the financial well-being of everyday Americans and fostering a fair, inclusive, and supportive workplace where employees can thrive. You believe that policies should empower, not just enforce, and you're committed to balancing compliance with compassion
- Financial Leadership & Integrity. With at least 8 years of progressive accounting experience, including 4 or more years in a leadership role, you bring deep accounting expertise and a track record of leading high-performing teams with integrity, clarity, and accountability. You understand how to build trust through accurate, timely reporting and transparent financial operations. You've overseen complex audits, developed internal controls, and implemented best-in-class practices to ensure financial health and sustainability
- GAAP Mastery & Technical Excellence. You are fluent in GAAP and technical accounting standards and have successfully managed financial operations for organizations with $40M+ across multiple entities, including 501(c)4 and 501(c)(3). You know how to translate complex financial data into actionable insights and you're energized by designing systems and structures that scale with growth
- Systems Thinker & Operational Builder. You're not just an accountant - you're a systems thinker who understands how financial infrastructure supports long-term strategy. You've led system implementations or upgrades, optimized workflows, and streamlined processes to increase accuracy, efficiency, and clarity across the board
- Cross-Functional Collaborator. You excel at building relationships across teams and communicating financial concepts in ways that are accessible, empowering, and actionable. You see Finance as a partner to the entire organization and proactively support team members with the tools, training, and insights they need to make informed decisions
- Nonprofit or Mission-Driven Experience. You understand the unique requirements of nonprofit accounting - including grant and fund accounting, indirect cost rates, and funder compliance. You've led successful audits and tax filings (i.e. Form 990) and you're confident in navigating the nuances of restricted funds and complex reporting structures
- Change Leader & Scaler. You've helped organizations evolve - whether by scaling teams, improving systems, or building new processes. You're skilled at identifying what's needed now and building for what's next, balancing urgency with sustainability
- People-Centered. You lead with empathy, clarity, and a deep investment in your team's growth and well-being. You set clear goals, offer meaningful feedback, and foster a culture of continuous learning, collaboration, and excellence
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- CPA designation
- Experience supporting participatory budgeting and/or collaborative financial planning
