Position Overview

The Controller will play a critical role in managing the organization’s accounting department, ensuring compliance with financial regulations, and collaborating with senior leadership to execute its financial goals. This role includes supervising the accounting team, implementing robust internal controls, and serving as a key liaison to communicate financial insights to stakeholders, including the board of directors.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Accounting & Reporting: Manage accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems to ensure they align with regulatory requirements and organizational standards. Maintain schedules for general ledger accounts such as fixed assets, deferred revenue, and accrued liabilities.
  • Internal Controls: Establish and enforce accounting controls and documented procedures across geographic regions.
  • Compliance: Prepare government-mandated reports, including property taxes, licensing, and registrations, and ensure timely completion of annual accounting deadlines (LM2’s, 990’s, and audits).
  • Audit Coordination: Serve as the main point of contact for external audits, providing financial schedules and required records.
  • Team Leadership: Oversee and mentor accounting staff, ensuring the organization has sufficient expertise and support in accounting operations.
  • Budgeting & Planning: Collaborate with leadership and board members to develop annual budgets, monitor updates, and present accurate financial reports. Support strategic planning through financial statements and performance analyses.
  • Financial Strategy: Work closely with senior executives to develop investment strategies, create long-term financial goals, and ensure sustainable growth of the organization.
  • Collaboration: Partner with cross-functional teams to enhance financial operations and resolve accounting-related issues proactively.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Present financial updates to board members and committee meetings, and foster strong relationships with organizational leaders.
  • Regional Oversight: Travel occasionally to regional offices to ensure alignment with financial systems and protocols.
  • Minimum Requirements:

    • Experience: Minimum 3 years of experience as a Controller or in a senior accounting role within the nonprofit industry.
    • Knowledge & Skills: Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and procedures, including experience with general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and cash management functions.
    • Leadership: Proven experience supervising accounting staff and managing accounting operations.
    • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA or CMA preferred).
    • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills with proven ability to collaborate effectively across teams.
    • Problem-Solving: Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Confidentiality: Proven ability to handle sensitive and confidential documents with discretion.
    • Multitasking: Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and thrive in high-pressure situations.
