🚀 How do you plan a sustainable transport solution for a city set to host the Olympics? This was the challenge put to 30 young transport professionals in our Melbourne office. The workshop was organised with Young Transport Professionals (YTP), which we are proud to sponsor. 🌍 With the Paris Olympics just 2 months away, Australia is already looking ahead to the Brisbane 2032 Olympics. The goal? Deliver a world-class, carbon-neutral event that leaves a lasting legacy for South-East Queensland. 🗺️ Armed with a map, teams had 45 minutes to understand the transport challenges facing three potential Olympic venues and design a solution to pitch to our esteemed judging panel. The innovative pitches included circular rail lines, dedicated bus lanes, cable cars, and even a ferris wheel! 🎉 The energy was palpable, and the competition fierce. Judge ehab saad remarked, "Aside from the Brisbane Olympic challenge, the teams had to understand the dynamics of their new teammates, complete the task within 45 minutes, and formulate a presentation and pitch. I was impressed by the various results and thinking in the final presentations." 🙏 Thanks to our judges for their insightful and constructive comments: Andrew Kim, Lucille Gusah, ehab saad, Gemma Tolfo, to Niels van Toor, for creating and facilitating this successful workshop and to Nicki Madden for organising it. 👏 And a big shoutout to all the participants for their teamwork and great innovative ideas. 👉 To find out more about our Australian team: https://lnkd.in/g4kgztAt #Transport #Olympics #Sustainability #Brisbane2032 #Innovation

🚨 Sustainability and efficiency in sport ⚽: An example of the French national soccer team to reflect on ✈️ 🙌 After winning the European Championship round of 16 🏆 against Belgium, the French national soccer team flew from Düsseldorf to Paderborn - a distance of just 177 kilometres 🤔. This short flight shows that we still have a lot to learn in the area of sustainability 🌿. Instead of an efficient two-hour bus journey 🚌, a complex journey with bus to Düsseldorf Airport, check-in, boarding and another bus journey from Paderborn Airport was undertaken. 🚌➡️🛫➡️🚌 ❗💡 My conclusion: some flights are not efficient for reasons of time alone - not logistically and not for reasons of sustainability anyway. Let's rethink together how we plan journeys - in sport and beyond - to act more sustainably and efficiently. 🌍💚 At Wavestone, for example, we no longer fly on certain domestic German routes, e.g. between Munich and Frankfurt or between Munich and Berlin. Why - because the train connection is usually faster! ❓ What do you think about the French national team's flight between Düsseldorf and Paderborn? Regardless of this discussion, I would like to wish both the French and the German national teams good luck today in the European Championship 🙌. #Sustainability #Efficiency #Environmental #GreenTravel #ShapingTheFuture

🎉 The Olympics are going to leave some very memorable moments for many people, especially those who had the opportunity to experience it in person. Sport unites society in a very unique way, and I’m happy we could contribute to making many people a part of such an incredible celebration by providing affordable and reliable travel options with Flix. Here are a few facts from our passengers on the Paris 2024 Olympics: 📍 Our top international routes were Brussels-Paris and London-Paris, while on domestic lines it was Lille-Paris and Le Havre-Paris. 🌍 While most people traveled within France to the event, the next biggest travel groups came from Belgium, followed by Germany. 🚍 In true Flix style, we’ve pulled off some incredible long-distance trips, including a journey from Sebes, Romania to Paris – 2063 km with just one connection. 🏀Lille saw an increased demand too for tickets, with the basketball and handball games bringing many travelers to the city and the games. 🚄Finally, with the sabotage attacks on the SNCF infrastructure just hours before the opening ceremony, Flix and other businesses saw a sudden increase in interest. We had to fill the gap, and this is only possible because of the open and fair competition in a country like France. If not, there might not have been alternatives, and these heinous actions could have much bigger consequences. It once again highlights how important it is that we have multiple options, so the passengers always come out on top, whether it is due to these attacks that I highly condemn, strikes, or other unforeseen events. Competition helps us create a more resilient system, and the Paris games were a strong example of exactly that. #Olympics2024 #Paris2024

Hosting any sporting event always comes with it's hurdles, particularly in logistics. From managing the volume of people from athletes to coaches to spectators from all over the world, but also in terms of organising everything that accompanies such spectacular events. The 2024 Olympic games in Paris have been encapsulating to watch, and we are sure the Paralympics will be much the same. But, while we are drawn in by these amazing athletes and their achievements. We couldn’t help but ponder about the surrounding logistics and the planning/processes undertaken to ensure a seamless operation. It is credit to CEVA Logistics for always having such an innovative approach while keeping sustainability at its core. Logistics companies are consistently under governmental and customer pressure to increase the sustainability of their operations. Olympic gold for Logistics Staging the “Greatest Show on Earth” is a mammoth feat and now that the games are live, what lessons have Paris learnt about the logistics of the Games? The complexity of how to supply the Olympic venues, whilst keeping the City functioning will have taken years of planning. Learning from our experiences is imperative, in the same way as London learnt from Beijing, Paris has looked to London Olympics planners for their experiences. In TfL’s Legacy Report, much of the success of the 2012 experience was down to the meticulous advanced planning across Government and industry that ensured London’s supply chains delivered. Key lessons from London 2012 included: - Collaboration across the public, private and the Olympic planning teams - Prioritise, reduce and remove movements as far as possible - Move vehicles away from peaks of people movements What this takes is flexibility, planning and communication. Paris have created some great interactive maps, with live data, provided advice to businesses operating in affected areas and explained how operations can deliver cleaner during the Games and beyond. In the coming months we will undoubtedly hear how effective those preparation have gone and how Parisians and city businesses, found the Olympic experience. This becomes the foundation of how the next City, LA, can build on learnings from all previous Games. The legacy of what was achieved in 2012 is in how we can deliver and service our cities better: · It is possible to take a more collaborative approach, between competing businesses and between the public and private sectors. We have seen a greater emphasis on freight strategies with local authorities and subnational transport bodies, working with freight companies to design approaches that reduce the impact of goods transport whilst maximising the economic value. · Out of hours deliveries are possible without causing a nuisance if done with care and consideration from all parties. As a result of the work at the Games, out of hours deliveries have become a greater potential intervention in strategies for managing logistics in urban centres. · Planning, whether it be for major events, or for “freak” occurrences is the linchpin for any logistics operation. This is a feature that government are now better recognising. · In order to create sustainable operations, whether that be financial sustainability or environmental, reduction has to be the priority. At Polaris we can help to creative inventive solutions that have a foundation in practicality and real life experience. Our team were key players in the development of tools for the London Olympics and since then have been using the learnings gained from this to help different sectors understand the challenges and opportunities of having great freight strategies that have solutions that are based on fact based experience.

The #LA2028 Olympics are already shaping their sustainability policy- here's what you need to know: 🏗️ No new permanent venues will be built solely for Olympic use- organisers will utilise existing venues around the city (and some beyond). This initiative should save a whopping $150 million, which will be allocated elsewhere in the Olympic budget. 🚗 LA 2028 will be a 'no car games'- the cities' public transport systems will be adapted and expanded to ensure that no spectators will be driving, with over 3000 buses to be borrowed from around the country. 🌿Sustainability was a core objective in the planning of Paris 2024, and the organisers of LA's games are picking up these targets. Are these goals realistic?

LA28, the Sustainable Footprint of the Car-Free Olympics Los Angeles is set to make history by hosting the first-ever “zero-construction” Olympics, focusing on sustainability and innovation. Under the vision of Mayor Karen Bass, the LA28 Games will be accessible solely via public transportation, with an ambitious plan to introduce 3,000 new buses and strengthen the rail network. For the first time, existing sports venues, like the iconic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, will be refurbished rather than newly built, aligning with the International Olympic Committee's sustainability goals. This commitment not only promises a greener event but also revitalizes the city’s infrastructure.
