Early connections last a lifetime.

About us

ZERO TO THREE is a national nonprofit organization that informs, trains and supports professionals, policymakers and parents in their efforts to improve the lives of infants and toddlers. Neuroscientists have documented that our earliest days, weeks and months of life are a period of unparalleled growth when trillions of brain cell connections are made. Research and clinical experience also demonstrate that health and development are directly influenced by the quality of care and experiences a child has with his parents and other adults. That is why at ZERO TO THREE our mission is to ensure all babies and toddlers have a strong start in life. We know that as babies, the way we are held, talked to and cared for teaches us about who we are and how we are valued. This profoundly shapes who we will become. Early experiences set a course for a lifelong process of discovery about ourselves and the world around us. Simply put, early experiences matter. We encourage you to learn more about very young children, early development and the work of ZERO TO THREE by exploring our site. Explore opportunities at zerotothree.org/careers

Every day, you’re shaping the future — one child, one family, one community at a time. Your work matters. Now more than ever, children need champions — educators who advocate, caregivers who nurture, and leaders who refuse to let politics dictate a child’s future. At LEARN 2025, we’re turning knowledge into action. Because making a difference doesn’t just happen in classrooms and clinics — it happens when we come together and demand better for babies, toddlers and their families. • Early intervention works. Research shows that 42% of young children who receive early intervention no longer need special education by kindergarten. But that progress depends on access to care. Medicaid plays a critical role. As a key funder of early intervention through IDEA Part C, Medicaid helps cover essential services like occupational, speech and physical therapy for families at every income level. Cuts to Medicaid could mean fewer services for children with disabilities and developmental delays, right when their brains are growing the fastest. In a recent WBUR interview, Johanna Lister, Director of Policy for HealthySteps, made clear that cuts to Medicaid would gut essential early childhood services and put families in impossible situations: https://wbur.fm/4iN0FB2

  • While working as a child care provider, Masele Navarro recalls one mother who had a hard time dropping her child off every day. Masele took the time to get to know the parent and discuss her feelings. "She explained the reason she stays is because her child is her heart. And every time she drops off her child, she drops off her heart to us." Listen to more of Masele's story of her why: https://bit.ly/4iy98bm

  • The US Department of Education plays a pivotal role in administering and supporting programs that support infants, toddlers, and preschoolers across the country. Through programs like the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, over 2.5 million young children gain access to developmental services and early learning support every year. At the same time, the early childhood workforce providing this care is underpaid, overburdened, and often left out of public support programs like student loan forgiveness. Without action, the child care crisis will only grow, hurting not just families but our future. Learn more about how the Department of Education supports babies and toddlers: https://bit.ly/42helhP

  • In early childhood, four key dispositions shape meaningful practice: self-awareness, curiosity, reflection, and intention. These aren't step-by-step instructions—they're mindsets. They influence how educators understand themselves, their students, and their role in shaping development. When embraced, these dispositions can transform how we relate to children, make decisions, and grow professionally. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gXYM_5qA

  • Millions of babies and their families benefit from services and programs funded through federal grants, including health care, nutrition assistance, child care and early learning, housing and more. How would potential delays or budget cuts to these programs impact you or the families you serve? We want to amplify your story and let Members of Congress know what babies and families need to thrive: https://bit.ly/423433J
