Continuing our celebration of Earth Day, here is a case study on the successful direct reuse of 31% hydrogen peroxide: The Challenge: WTS was approached by a client in the semiconductor manufacturing industry looking for a sustainable solution for an episodic stream of 31% hydrogen peroxide generated from their tank passivation process. Prior to WTS’ involvement, our client was unable to find an economically viable sustainable solution for this material, nor cost effective transportation and disposal options. WTS’ Solution: The hydrogen peroxide was clean enough to sell directly to two WTS pre-approved chemical distributor suppliers and was ultimately directly reused in industrial cleaning operations The distributors are ACD members, operating safely under ACD’s Responsible Distribution guidelines. Our client is able to classify this material as a product, removing it from RCRA. Significant savings are realized as well – each load achieves ~$40k in savings vs. disposal. Total savings vs. traditional disposal on this project so far are roughly $300k. Finally, the buyer of this product replaces virgin Hydrogen Peroxide with a reused product, avoiding the environmental impact and additional costs of purchasing virgin material.

Cement production accounts for a staggering 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions—an industry-wide challenge that calls for innovative, scalable solutions. While many U.S. cement kilns have begun incorporating alternative fuels, virgin fossil fuels still dominate the energy mix. There’s enormous potential to shift this balance. By replacing coal, petroleum coke, and natural gas with re-used fuels and supplementary cementitious materials, we can dramatically reduce the carbon footprint of cement manufacturing and drive meaningful progress toward global sustainability goals. At WTS, we’re proud to be leading the charge in sustainable waste management by finding creative, high-impact alternatives for difficult-to-recycle materials. In 2024 alone, we directed over 33 million pounds of waste into fuel blending and Alternative Engineered Fuel (AEF) programs, keeping massive volumes of material out of landfills and reducing reliance on virgin fossil fuels. We’ve also helped semiconductor manufacturers find new life for Calcium Fluoride sludge as a cement ingredient—transforming waste into valuable resources and supporting a more sustainable cement industry. #Sustainability #ResponsibleCare #CircularEconomy #WasteToValue
