Fighting poverty and providing healthy food to Houston families for over 40 years

About us

West Houston Assistance Ministries (WHAM) was founded after seven local churches came together in the early 80's to form a central organization that could address the needs of those coming daily through their church doors seeking help. Today, thousands in Houston still live in poverty and are struggling to meet their needs while facing tough choices on how to allocate scarce resources. This is why WHAM focuses on offering services that meet basic needs like food and clothing, prevent eviction and homelessness, like rent/mortgage and utility assistance, and provide access to education and job training to lift people out of poverty, promote independence, and connect them to tools that help them build better lives. Together with the other services we provide (Back to School, Summer Lunches, Disaster Relief, etc), we contribute to alleviating poverty and building a strong and thriving community. However, we couldn't do it on our own - individuals, businesses, organizations, churches and schools throughout Houston provide the vital resources and volunteer hours to help over 132,000 clients in 2022. Every donation - be it financial, time volunteered, food items, or items donated to our Resale Store, as well as every purchase from our store, benefits the families we serve. This allows us to live out our mission: to serve those who come to us for help regardless of background, belief or circumstance. Our Core Programs Food Pantry (the largest in West Houston); Financial assistance (for rent/utilities); Employment & Education Services (ESL, GED, financial literacy, resume building and job coaching, etc); WHAM Resale Store (Aka Second Blessing)

  • A statement from WHAM's CEO, Rev. Dr. Mark Brown: West Houston Assistance Ministries (WHAM) food pantry has been a lifeline for those needing food and support for decades. Our dedicated volunteers and staff arrive before sunrise every morning, preparing food for hundreds of community members. WHAM is widely recognized for providing generous amounts of meat, fresh fruits and vegetables, baked goods, canned items, and much more. Recently, however, we've encountered significant challenges. Funding cuts to the Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) and the imposition of tariffs have drastically increased our food costs and limited supplies. Over the past few weeks, we've experienced a noticeable drop in donated fresh produce and canned goods from our partners. As a result, we're forced to purchase these essential items ourselves, adding thousands of dollars in unexpected expenses. Despite these setbacks, we remain committed to doing all we can to support our community. Now, more than ever, we need your help to continue our mission of providing for those facing food insecurity.

  • Nelson’s story is one of those that just sticks with you. As an immigrant who moved to the US last year as a legal resident, he came with big dreams and ambitious plans. Talented and with expertise in 3D modeling and architectural design, he quickly learned that starting fresh in a new country isn’t as easy as it sounds. The job offers didn’t come as fast as he had hoped, and the bills piled up fast! To keep afloat, Nelson worked as a server at a local restaurant. It wasn’t glamorous, but he figured it would do for now. But reality hit hard—those paychecks weren’t enough to cover rent, groceries, and all the other basics. Before long, he was behind on rent and staring at an empty fridge. That’s when he decided to reach out for help, and thankfully, WHAM was there as a safety net to catch him before things got worse. WHAM really did step in like a lifeline. We helped cover his rent for two months and made sure he had food on the table. That breathing room was exactly what Nelson needed. With the immediate pressure off, he could focus on moving forward. And that is exactly what he did—he soon got promoted to line cook, which gave him just enough income to stay on top of his bills. But wait! Here’s the best part of this success story...not long after getting back on his feet with our help, Nelson landed a job in his field—architectural design! All that hard work and perseverance finally paid off; now he’s doing what he loves. This is what WHAM is all about—helping people when they’re at their lowest so they can rise again. We don’t just provide food or pay bills; we give people like Nelson a chance to rebuild their lives. It’s about more than just surviving—it’s about thriving. Nelson’s story is proof that with a little help and a lot of determination, it’s possible to turn things around and chase life dreams again! To help us empower and uplift more lives like Nelson's, we need donations. Please consider making a meaningful gift at https://buff.ly/h0r6Czd. Thank you! #Whamministries #EmpathyInAction #Houstonstories #ServeHouston #WHAMimpact #CommunityService #FightingPoverty
