Raghavendra Shanbhag, Associate Principal & Creative Director of Architecture, joined a distinguished panel at HICSA to discuss "Developing Sustainable Resorts". Moderated by Uttam Dave, FRICS, and joined by panelists Armand Meyer, John Gerondelis, and Rengy John, the panel explored how sustainability is being redefined in resort development—from ecological responsibility to human-centricity and cultural authenticity. Always Nature-First Sustainable resorts begin with respecting the land. A nature-first mindset means working with, not against, the environment—touching the site lightly, and tailoring the design to its scale, context, and ecological potential. By integrating optimal building techniques and engaging environmental engineers, botanists, and heritage consultants, we reduce operational demands while enhancing biodiversity through regenerative landscapes and the reintroduction of indigenous species. Climate resilience safeguards long-term value for owners and communities alike. Wellness Reimagined Wellness is breaking out of the spa. Today’s experiential travelers seek holistic wellbeing woven into every facet of the guest journey—from daylight-filled gyms to immersive outdoor experiences that celebrate nature. No longer an add-on or afterthought, wellness has evolved into a lifestyle offering with direct impact on bottom line. Bespoke, place-specific amenities are now essential social anchors for guests, members, and day visitors alike. Guest & Staff Wellbeing A resort is only as strong as its people. With labor shortages affecting the industry globally, prioritizing staff wellness and community-building is a strategic imperative. Thoughtfully designed back-of-house spaces, soft programming, and inclusive environments are essential for attracting and retaining talent—transforming resorts into workplaces of choice as well as destinations of desire. Authenticity as the Core Narrative Today’s guests crave meaning on top of luxury. Hyper-local design strategies and culturally resonant storytelling are redefining what it means to create a “sense of place.” From indigenous materials to curated guest experiences, authenticity is an expectation. The goal: to craft culturally deeply rooted resorts that are impossible to replicate anywhere else. Thank you Hotelivate, Manav Thadani and the team for the opportunity to share our insights.

Located at the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula, Nobu Hotel Los Cabos is a modern luxury resort and residences that captures the spirit of Cabo San Lucas from the unique perspective of Nobu. Rooted in the philosophy of the internationally acclaimed Nobu restaurants, the resort embraces the same commitment to authenticity and sense of place. Chef Nobuyuki Matsuhisa’s fusion cuisine balances its signature approach with regional influences, incorporating locally sourced ingredients that celebrate each location’s unique flavors. Throughout the design process, WATG’s team engaged directly with Nobu’s founding members, including meetings at Nobu Malibu with Meir Teper, one of the brand’s original visionaries. These conversations shaped the creative direction, drawing strong parallels between culinary and architectural design. “The team meticulously considered every design element to ensure it was deeply rooted in the local surroundings while reflecting Nobu's refined luxury. The client's support of WATG's creativity and innovative approach enabled the realization of a vision that was truly unique to the location” - Lance Walker, Managing Principal, Landscape Architecture. A big thank you to LIV Hospitality Design Awards, and everyone who joined us for a dynamic and thought-provoking panel at Hotel & Shop Plus Expo in Shanghai on Designing the Future – Opportunities in Lifestyle Hotels & Boutique Resorts. Moderated by Tarek Hegazy, Chiara Calufetti-Lim, Principal and Studio Director of Architecture, along with Tina Norden, Corinna Kretschmar-Joehnk, Carl Wee and Peter Joehnk shared their forward-looking views. Exploring how design can respond to evolving guest expectations, create authentic connections, and unlock new opportunities, key takeaways included: Wellness & Nature Integration – Wellness-driven stays are expanding beyond spa offerings to include holistic treatments, nourishing food programs, and nature-inspired design strategies, even in urban environments. Authentic Local Connections – Through culturally rooted storytelling, architecture and interiors can interpret local heritage in ways that are both immersive and deeply personal. Sustainability with Purpose – From passive and regenerative design to adaptive reuse and social impact, sustainability is being redefined to serve both people and the planet. How can environmental resilience intersect with cost, financing, and long-term viability? Hospitality as a Model for Other Sectors – The experiential, wellness-first mindset of hospitality is now influencing residential, healthcare, and workplace design—creating environments that prioritize joy, wellbeing, and human connection. Experiential & Flexible Stays – Low-fi, high-impact hospitality concepts are proving that great experiences don’t always require heavy investment. Temporary or informal lodging can catalyze development, offering flexibility and quick wins in emerging destinations. As we look ahead, the future of hospitality is immersive, intentional, and deeply rooted in place — full of opportunity and potential, waiting to be realized. A special thank you to Astrid Hebert and Hossein FARMANI for organizing the program.

Beyond Boundaries: Celebrating World Landscape Architecture Month 2025 - April marks World Landscape Architecture Month, a time to recognize the essential role landscape architecture plays in shaping our communities, restoring ecosystems, and fostering sustainable, meaningful connections with nature. “We aim to create spaces that not only captivate the eye but also resonate deeply with the cultural and environmental contexts in which they exist. Every project is an opportunity to transcend expectations and create meaningful experiences that stand the test of time.” – Ashley Scott, Global Practice Principal, Planning + Landscape. “Sustainability is not a feature, it’s a mindset that guides every decision we make. Going beyond boundaries means embracing solutions that regenerate the environment, engage communities, promote circular economies, and build resilience in our projects.” – Eric Carbonnier, PhD, AIA (aka dr.carbon.), Director of Sustainability. “It’s about creating spaces that nourish the human spirit and foster our connection with nature. To go beyond boundaries, we must design with empathy, listening to the needs of people, their communities, and the environment.” – Dan Hinch, Managing Principal, Planning + Landscape.
