  • Women Still Making #History 👩🎓 As promised, and in honor of #WomensHistoryMonth, here is the story of Malia Creech, a VNC alum who took the time to share her journey with us before departing for her new role at Lockheed Martin. "Something surprising we found is that we're probably the first ones to be creating this data..." Watch the full video to hear Malia’s story about her decision to pursue #STEM, her internship experience, and the insights shared by her mentor at Naval Postgraduate School. Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

  • Congratulations are in order for our Naval Postgraduate School Engineering Intern Malia Creech on obtaining a new position at Lockheed Martin. Our goal is to help transition our veterans into sustainable careers after their internships with us. This is yet another example of how over 99% of our veterans receive job offers before graduation! Again, a HUGE congratulations to our now alum Malia Creech. P.S. Be on the lookout for a feature on Malia for #WomensHistoryMonth #ComingSoon

Although Veterans Day has come and gone, the resources and support for our military veterans are always here; we just have to make sure that our veterans are aware of them! I am grateful to have been interviewed by the California State University system on the amazing experience I've had at San Jose State University's Veterans Resource Center (VRC). Our director, Maggie Morales, created the Veterans Career Readiness Program, which helped me translate my military experience into college and career preparation. The SJSU VRC ensured my military education benefits were best utilized and I found my community among these brilliant, kind, and awe-inspiring people. To read more on my experience at the SJSU VRC, please read this article: https://lnkd.in/gUvAakM8 Here are some other resources I have used as a military veteran to better help my knowledge, college, and career preparation: Veterans to Energy Careers - I am currently working as a Research Engineering Intern at the Naval Postgraduate School through the Veterans to Energy Careers (VTEC), soon to be renamed Veterans to Naval Careers. In my internship, I am creating ensemble machine learning models to detect faults on microgrid systems. I would not have had this opportunity, without the wonderful assistance and coaching of VTEC Recruiter and Talent Developer, Moses Maddox. Warrior-Scholar Project - Before I started at San Jose State University, I attended a week long bootcamp held at Caltech through the Warrior-Scholar Project program, where I had a crash course in re-integrating myself into college classes and the college community. Service to School - When I got out of the military, it felt like I had a whole new language and system I had to relearn in order to apply for college. Service to School paired me with a great mentor who helped me break down the college application process, and providing coaching on what would benefit my education goals best. These are only a handful of the resources that military veterans have, but these incredible programs and people have greatly helped me in my college journey after the military! #SJSU #veteran

  • 🎶 Mamma Said That It Was Okay 🎶 In honor of #InternationalDayOfWomenAndGirlsInStem here are TWO generations of women in #STEM Meet Malia Creech, a US Navy veteran and current VNC intern at Naval Postgraduate School and her Mother Sally Gonzales, a mechanical drafter at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory When Malia asked her mother if she could one day do what Iron Man does, her mother replied "Yeah, it's called engineering." And the rest is #history #WomenInSTEM #STEM #NPS #Veteran #Navy #Herstory #Empoweringveterans

  • “Theory is one thing—putting it into practice is another.” When Forest Shaner joined Veterans to Naval Careers (VNC), he knew an internship could help him transition into a STEM career, but he didn’t realize just how much hands-on experience would shape his future. “The application of engineering and the theory of engineering can be very different… so I learned a lot more practical skills.” Through VNC’s partnership with Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), veterans like Forest get the chance to apply their knowledge in real-world settings, work alongside experts, and build the skills needed for lasting careers. If you’re a veteran looking to break into STEM, internships like these can be game-changers. Let’s get you where you want to go. • 🚨 Exciting News! 🚨 Veterans to Energy Careers (VTEC) is now Veterans to Naval Careers (VNC)! This rebrand reflects our growing mission and commitment to expanding career opportunities for veterans. With a new grant from the Office of Naval Research (ONR), California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) has secured the second-largest federal grant in CSUSM history! This incredible support enables VNC to continue empowering veterans nationwide, helping them transition into meaningful careers in the naval sector. We’re thrilled about this next chapter and look forward to making an even greater impact. Stay tuned for more updates! I have an amazing intern Jason and wanted to share what we've been up to: Jason and I are deep into computer vision model training so that our autonomous sailing vessel can create its own spatial awareness and call its routing algorithms to avoid collisions. And do so within cost effective, inexpensive constraints. Here's a short code review! So much learning and so much fun. Great program Veterans to Energy Careers and shout out to Moses Maddox, Eric Hahn, and Naval Postgraduate School.

First, I love engagement, and I love questions, so let's answer some questions in a public forum, and I would love to know your thoughts: From Chris Berryman: "Has technology connected us or disconnected us? Or is both?" (He also shared a link). This is a gross cliff notes version of the bigger picture, so yeah, some stuff’s gonna get left out—but here’s the general idea: I’ve been around since the AOL Instant Messenger and ICQ days. GeoCities. Myspace. Back then, it was all about genuine connection. Even early Facebook and Twitter had that same vibe—just people trying to connect and share. Then the game changed. Media networks saw they could cash in. Big media figured out that divisive content keeps people engaged, and social media became the perfect way to keep that rage cycle going 24/7. Influencer culture only made it worse, hijacking connection and turning it into a money game. Now let’s talk LinkedIn. There was a time when it really was about building professional connections. But after Microsoft bought it for $26 billion in 2016, the focus shifted. Personal connections don’t make money—clickbait and influencers do. So to answer your question: I don’t think social media is about dividing or connecting—it’s about making money. If keeping us divided is what drives shareholder value, that’s the path they’ll take. And, unfortunately, far too many people are going along with it. And here we are. https://lnkd.in/gj_W_GBC
