Today, Verité and more than 100 civil society organizations are coming together to call on the Department of Labor to restore the $500 million in funding for the Bureau of International Labor Affairs (ILAB). These programs fought child labor, forced labor, and other labor abuses across 40 countries. Despite being justified as 'America First,' these cuts eliminate programs that actually ensure fair competition for American businesses in the global marketplace. Today I'm sharing an important message on a critical development: the elimination of funding for the US Department of Labor's ILAB programs that protect at-risk workers worldwide. The abrupt termination of these initiatives—representing more than $500 million across 69 programs in 40 countries — shatters decades of bipartisan commitment to fighting exploitation, forced labor, and child labor. The real impact of these ILAB cuts: workers facing unpaid wages, debt bondage, and harassment in factories and farms, while more children are forced into dangerous labor harvesting the food on our tables. ILAB's work hasn't just protected workers—it has ensured countries maintain labor standards and fair wages that level the playing field for American workers and businesses. The equation is clear: eliminating these programs rewards bad actors while punishing companies committed to workers' rights. The funding cuts, while presented as supporting an "America First" policy, will harm American businesses and workers. Therefore, it is crucial for more businesses to speak out and correct this misconception. I'm deeply grateful to our ILAB colleagues, whose expertise and support have allowed us to carry out vital research, create innovative resources and build coalitions addressing complex labor challenges.
