The Seattle Network for Influenza and Flu-Like Symptoms (SNIFLS) study team at the University of Washington is seeking volunteers who are currently experiencing cold or flu-like symptoms to join the SNIFLS study. There are in-person kiosk locations at the UW South Lake Union neighborhood clinic and the Health Sciences Education Building on the University of Washington campus. For those too sick to leave home, there is a remote option where the lab will mail you a kit with a swab. The swab can either be mailed back or dropped off at a kiosk. The SNIFLS study helps health officials make informed decisions about disease prevention and response strategies. Joining is voluntary, free, and does not affect your health care or coverage.

Misinformation about attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is spreading on TikTok, according to a recent study, largely coming from creators that are not licensed mental health professionals - many with a product to sell. The study, published in the journal PLOS One, found that fewer than 50 percent of the claims made in some of the most popular A.D.H.D. videos on TikTok offered information that matched diagnostic criteria or professional treatment recommendations for the disorder. And, the researchers found, even study participants who had already been diagnosed with A.D.H.D. had trouble discerning which information was most reliable. Margaret Sibley, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at University of Washington - School of Medicine told The Seattle Times that the information on TikTok “doesn’t always tell you the full story, and it can also lead the loudest voices to be overrepresented. People might not be discerning about what aspect of their experience is A.D.H.D. versus something else.”

Cancer is a scary diagnosis; a patient shouldn’t have to worry about what to do next. This is where the clinical partnership between UW Medicine and Fred Hutch makes a real difference, utilizing patient navigation for people facing a cancer diagnosis. Brad Simmons, president of UW Medicine Hospitals & Clinics and senior vice president for medical affairs at the University of Washington, says that the UW Medicine/Fred Hutch partnership is a “game-changer” for cancer care in the Pacific Northwest. “Ours is the only true integrated practice in the field, bringing two very recognizable brands together for the benefit of our patients.”

Rep. Frank Chopp, former speaker of the Washington House and a 1975 University of Washington graduate, died on March 22nd. "Rep. Chopp was dedicated to improving our state’s health care system, including mental health services. His advocacy for UW Medicine has enabled us to serve countless more patients, including through the Center for Behavioral Health and Learning. Rep. Chopp left our state a heathier, more prosperous place and that will stand as his enduring legacy. I was proud to work with him these past many years and our University is proud to count him among our accomplished alumni. The UW community joins his family and friends in mourning the loss of one of our state’s foremost public servants," says University of Washington President Ana Mari Cauce.
