Whether boots on the ground or high in the sky, our linemen work in any weather, day or night, to repair and maintain our 16,400 miles of transmission lines! Lineworkers have been essential to our work in the region. On National Lineman Appreciation Day, we are especially grateful for their dedication to their craft and service to the Tennessee Valley. Serving the Tennessee Valley through Energy, Environment, and Economic Development.
About us
For more than nine decades, the Tennessee Valley Authority has provided affordable electricity, environmental stewardship and economic development opportunities to the Tennessee Valley. TVA was established by Congress in 1933 to address a wide range of environmental, economic and technological issues, including the need for low-cost electricity, and navigation and flood control along the Tennessee River system. TVA is fully self-financing, funding virtually all operations through electricity sales and power system bond financing. TVA makes no profit and receives no tax money. TVA’s power service territory includes most off Tennessee and parts of Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina and Virginia, covering 80,000 square miles and providing electricity to 10 million people at prices below the national average, TVA sales electricity to 153 local power companies and 61 directly served customers, including 54 industrial customers and 7 military and federal installations. Mission: TVA was built for the people – to improve the quality of life in a seven-state region through the integrated management of the region’s resources. The mission focuses on three key areas: • Energy – To provide reliable, affordable electric power throughout the Tennessee Valley. • Environment – To be a steward of the region’s natural resources. • Economic Development – To serve as a catalyst for sustainable economic development. ENERGY: As the nation’s largest government-owned power provider, TVA delivers reliable, competitively priced electricity local power companies and major industrial customers and federal installations. ENVIRONMENT: The Tennessee Valley Authority is committed to limiting the environmental impact of its operations and protecting the natural resources of the region. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: TVA helps strengthen the regional economy by building partnerships with communities and the business sector to foster job growth and retention.

We rely on the dedicated lineworkers who built our 16,400 miles of transmission lines in the Valley, creating a legacy of service that continues to power us today. Thanks to their early commitment to the region, we are able to deliver affordable and reliable energy from our generating plants to the 10 million people we serve. #TBT #ThankALineman

We are advancing nuclear energy in the US. 🇺🇸 Our advanced small modular reactor project at the Clinch River Nuclear site in Oak Ridge is moving forward as we submit a letter of intent to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, letting them know that we plan to submit a construction permit application and environmental report documents this summer. You don’t see this every day; take a look at the empty Raccoon Mountain reservoir and the intake tower taller than the Statue of Liberty! 😲🗽 The team at Raccoon Mountain drained over a billion gallons of water out of the reservoir. The water has been removed so that skilled crews can refurbish Raccoon Mountain’s four spherical valves so that the pumped storage site can continue to provide over 1,600 megawatts of energy! 🇺🇸

Four coal-fired units at Shawnee Fossil Plant will continue to provide reliable, low-cost power to the grid with reduced emissions for the remainder of their projected life cycles! Teams recently completed a Selective Catalytic Reduction project to install emissions-reducing technology on units 2,3,7, and 8. We’re investing in low-cost dispatchable generation while enhancing air quality! 🇺🇸

What do drones, trains, and the river have in common? They’re all used to help save one of the rarest flowers in the world, of course! 🚋 🌻 Ruth’s golden aster only lives on two rivers: the Ocoee and the Hiwassee. Working with various partners, we gather the flower count each year and work to better understand and increase its habitat. Specialists ride along the Tennessee Valley Railroad, overseeing the process as drones fly overhead to capture detailed images of the riverbanks. Read more here: http://tva.me/ZFPg50UR873

Last month, we joined over 7,000 volunteers across the state to receive native tree seedlings from the TENNESSEE ENVIRONMENTAL COUNCIL in celebration of its annual Tennessee Tree Day. These trees will grow to help improve the air quality, cool our cities, and provide a healthy habitat for the many species in our region!🌳🐟🪺
