True Farms Ghana, also known as True Moringa, is bridging this gap by transforming lives and landscapes through the power of moringa, and its impact is deep-rooted with over 2 million moringa trees planted, 150+ jobs created and has created significant income growth for participating farmers. Founded in 2013 by Kwami Williams and Emily Cunningham, this Ghanaian social enterprise empowers over 5,000 smallholder farmers by providing technical training, organic inputs, and guaranteed markets for their moringa crops. With a vertically integrated supply chain, the company transforms moringa leaves into superfood products under the Moringa Foods brand and moringa seeds into natural beauty products under the award-winning True Moringa brand. As a member of Orange Corners Ghana Cohort 10, implemented by GrowthAfrica, True Farms continues to scale its impact through targeted business support, strategic partnerships, and a mission-driven model that places farmers at the centre of every product. 5 years ago, we took a hard look at our supply chain and asked ourselves - What would it look like to create a farming model that eliminated barriers to entry for women to farm higher value crops like moringa? So we asked women farmers. Here is what they said: 🌿 Access to land - many women in rural Ghana do not have access to land of their own, which makes it impossible to grow tree crops 👶 Access to childcare - on-site care for babies and toddlers and support to keep school age children in school 🕒 Flexible hours - to allow mothers time to care for their families 💰 Access to patient capital - covering the upfront cost of irrigation, fertilizer, and organic seeds that can be paid back over a long time horizon 🧺 Access to market - a guaranteed market for higher value crops to reduce risk Through these changes, the number of women farming moringa at a meaningful scale in our community has gone from virtually zero to 72% on our organic regenerative farm. 👏🏿 Join us in celebrating our True Moringa Field Officer Mavis Siantey on winning a Whole Foods Market Foundation Field Officer Appreciation Award for outstanding service! 🌿 As a teenager, Mavis started a 50 tree moringa farm in her community in 2018. At the time, tree farming was a male dominated endeavor, but many women in the community were inspired and began asking Mavis to teach them how to grow the tree. 👩🏿🌾 Mavis recruited 50 farmers in her community to join her. We were so impressed by her work that asked her to join our field to train new moringa farmers and lead Village Savings & Loan Associations (VSLA) groups to help farmers save and lend the income they earned from moringa. 🌱 Today, Mavis is one of True Moringa’s most successful field officers, leading 145 farmers in her community. Her VSLA groups have a 100% repayment rate. They have saved $66,000 and dispersed over $80,500 in loans since 2019. 🌳 We recently paid a visit to Mavis’ farm to see those original 50 trees in bloom 6 years later - a testament to the power of consistency, hard work, and community ❤️ We are grateful for Mavis and all of our farmers today and every day!
