Study results published earlier this week demonstrate the benefits of integrating behavioral health in primary care settings. Over 16 months, the Trayt Health-supported Vermont Child Psychiatry Access Program (VTCPAP) facilitated nearly 600 patient-specific psychiatric consults for primary care providers (PCPs)—including in rural and underserved areas of Vermont. PCPs using the program reported feeling better prepared to care for their patients’ mental health, as well as having a better work life balance in their own clinical practice.   Our medical team participated in the research. Approximately 40% of adults with chronic pain also have clinically significant anxiety and depression, according to a new study. Noting the prevalence of these co-occurring conditions, researchers called for the expansion of routine mental health screening in clinical settings where people are being treated for chronic pain.    Trayt Health is a strong advocate for universal behavioral health screening. New research on postpartum depression provides some of the first evidence that the condition is associated with physical changes in the brain before childbirth. The findings could someday help identify a roadmap for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. The American Heart Association recently issued a scientific statement calling for the integration of routine psychological health screening and treatment during and after pregnancy. Even one therapy session can help someone struggling with a mental health issue, according to new research—but not if the session is spent completing paperwork. Researchers from Northwestern Medicine found an 83% positive-effect rate from a targeted single-session intervention (SSI).    More common in countries outside the U.S., SSIs are structured interventions intentionally designed to provide meaningful support in just one meeting. A new study may help state maternal mental health programs determine how to allocate resources to protect women during and after pregnancy.     Published last week in JAMA Network Open, the study demonstrates that mortality from pregnancy-associated homicide, suicide, drug overdose, and firearms varies widely across the US. By examining multiple modalities, it is also a good reminder to maternal health programs to think broadly—many factors may present risks to health and safety during pregnancy and postpartum.
