Members of our team were busy this week in Ottawa sharing concussion information and resources for children and adolescents at the Earl of March SS School Council✏️🏫. Tara Leach, PHC-NP, a local Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner, and Dr. Jennifer Dawson, PhD, a concussion researcher at the CHEO Research Institute and TRANSCENDENT team member, shared the latest evidence-based strategies to help teachers, coaches, parents, and students recognize concussions, support recovery, and ensure a safe return to learning and activity. Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital is amongst an elite group of health care organizations across the country that will form the Canadian Precision Health Initiative (CPHI). Today, Genome Canada announced an $80 million investment in precision health to transform health care in Canada by unlocking genome sequencing data for more personalized, preventative, and cost-effective care. Through this investment, Holland Bloorview will build the largest Canadian transdiagnostic sequencing effort in pediatric neurodevelopmental conditions, mental health and brain injury. These efforts will transform genome science as a tool for equitable access to innovation and will democratize knowledge on genetic differences underlying neurodiversity, brain injury and mental health to support personalized health solutions for all. We are pleased to announce that Dr. Andrée-Anne Ledoux (CHEO Research Institute), alongside Principal InvestigatorsDr. Roger Zemek (CHEO Research Institute) and Dr. Noah Silverberg (The University of British Columbia), has been awarded a CIHR Fall 2024 Project Grant to study a mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) for post-concussion symptoms in youth. 👏🧠One-third of children with concussions experience prolonged emotional symptoms, such as anxiety and sadness, which impact their quality of life. This innovative project will evaluate the effectiveness of a smartphone-based mindfulness intervention in helping youth regulate emotions, reduce stress, and manage post-concussive symptoms. ⭐️Congratulations to Dr. Ledoux and the entire research team on this important initiative!
