“Tell the group a fun fact about yourself…” Me: HARD NOPE! There’s something about ice breakers that trigger horror and full body panic. Suddenly I’m like: “Do I like dogs? Do I even HAVE hobbies? What IS fun?” "Is my name even Julie?" Is team building completely essential YES! But does team building have to be the most awkward moments of our lives (and not in a hilarious way...) NO! At Towner Communications we do some form of "official" team building every Monday morning. We all know what we would do with a million dollars, who builds the best paper airplane, and what famous person we would take with us if we were stranded on an island. But our most important team building is done when we're elbows and eyeballs deep in crisis, or shared stories of WTF moments, or just being around each other (yes in-office is essential to us). It's my humble opinion that not everyone thinks my facts are fun (or flattering) and after some time spent together, you'll organically get to know people hidden tidbits of who they are. The best teams are built on trust through shared experiences, some grit, and group texts that would make HR nervous.
