The Transfarmation Project
Non-profit Organizations
A farmer-led movement for a better food system.
About us
Our mission is to build collective power sufficient to realize a just and sustainable food system. Transfarmation does this by helping farmers transition from industrial animal agriculture operations to raising crops for human consumption. By creating models of alternative economic opportunities, building solidarity with other movements, and shifting societal narratives to change culture, we will realize a just and sustainable food system.

The USDA aims to permanently allow increased line speeds at pig and chicken slaughterhouses and processing plants. It will also end a requirement that companies operating at faster line speeds must report worker safety data. Did you know that working at meat-processing plants is one of the world’s most dangerous jobs? Nearly half of frontline meatpacking workers live in low-income families (below 200% of the federal poverty line), and about one in eight have income below the poverty line. In pork plants, nearly half of workers studied had a higher risk for musculoskeletal disorders. In poultry plants, that number was over 80%. Data also shows that worker illness and injury cases in slaughterhouses and processing plants were six times higher than the average for all industries in 2022. The exploitation of workers by agribusiness giants is an overlooked social injustice in the United States. To dismantle factory farming, we must stand up for all who suffer at the hands of giant meat companies and work together to construct a compassionate food system.

Regardless of whether an industrial animal farm is called a “CAFO,” a “factory farm,” or something else, our food system has a big problem. We know that our industrial food system is bad for farmers, the planet, consumers, and animals. That’s why Transfarmation™ works with farmers stuck in this exploitative system. By helping them transition their operations, we’re improving conditions for everyone. Learn more about what’s possible at https://lnkd.in/gV4CePAV.

A factory farm or CAFO is also typically characterized by keeping animals in confined spaces for at least 45 days in a 12-month period and providing animals with feed instead of permitting them to graze. The bottom line? Factory farms prioritize production and profit over everything else. Read more:

Savor the goodness of nature with mushrooms! Did you know that mushrooms are not only a flavor-packed delight but also a sustainable choice? The switch to growing mushrooms contributes to a greener planet and a safer environment for neighboring communities. It can also be more profitable. These are just a few of the reasons why specialty mushrooms are one of the most popular options for farmers looking to transition from industrial animal agriculture. It’s CSA sign-up season! Farmshares have a number of benefits, but one of the most important is that it gives consumers an opportunity to directly support the people growing their food. Connecting directly with farmers means consumers can learn about growing practices and sustainability! Did you know that joining a CSA often means saving money on produce?! There are so many benefits to signing up to support local farmers. Find a program near you at LocalHarvest.org.
