Here at The Trevor Project, volunteers play a critical role in supporting LGBTQ+ young people. This Volunteer Appreciation Week, we’re sending our unending gratitude to those folks in the U.S. and Mexico on Team Trevor, who show up for LGBTQ+ young people on the other end of the line every day. Like Venice, our volunteer crisis counselors each have meaningful lived experiences that they bring as volunteers. They listen, hold space for hard feelings, and in the process, save lives that deserve to be here. #VolunteerAppreciationWeek #TheTrevorProject #LGBTQ #MentalHealth

Our new research makes it clear: economic insecurity is a mental health crisis for LGBTQ+ young people. ➡️ 40% of LGBTQ+ youth have faced food insecurity, houselessness, or unmet basic needs ➡️Transgender and nonbinary youth experienced 77% greater odds of food insecurity ➡️ LGBTQ+ youth who have faced houselessness had over twice the odds of a suicide attempt in the past year (9% vs. 24%) Basic needs are not optional — they are essential for survival, dignity, and mental health. For LGBTQ+ young people everywhere, housing is healthcare. Food is mental healthcare. Safety is non-negotiable. Breaking News: A leaked budget draft reveals the federal administration has proposed to defund the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline’s LGBTQ+ youth specialized services for Fiscal Year 2026. This move would strip The Trevor Project’s federal funding, and halt life-saving services that have supported more than 1.2 million LGBTQ+ young people. We are calling on Congress to fight back against this reckless proposal – and protect this life-saving, bipartisan program for generations to come. Read more in our official statement below. https://lnkd.in/erfpGkHZ

Senior Manager of State Advocacy, Gabby Doyle (she/her) spoke in front of the Nevada Senate Committee on Commerce & Labor Hearing on behalf of SB 171, legislation that would secure legal protections for healthcare providers and patients of prescribed transgender medical care in Nevada. These bills, often referred to as ‘shield laws’, provide protections to patients and providers of legal, best-practice transgender medical care from punitive actions in other states. Currently, 16 states have laws and executive orders safeguarding access to transgender medical care. Transgender youth can thrive when they are supported by their families and receive the health care they need. Research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that transgender medical care for transgender teens was associated with 60% lower odds of moderate or severe depression and 73% lower odds of suicide risk. Shield laws… ✅ Establish protections for medical providers and patients in states where legal transgender medical care is already provided. ✅ Ensure transgender people who reside in other states can access prescribed care in states where shield laws are enacted. Shield laws… ❌ Do not change the standards of transgender medical care provided in the state. ❌ Do not change current state laws regulating the provision of transgender medical care to young people. As we honor Women’s History Month, we reflect on the incredible strides LGBTQ+ women have made, from fighting for voting rights and equal pay to reproductive justice and trans equity. True empowerment means uplifting and embracing all women: queer and trans, asexual and bisexual, gay and lesbian, and everyone in between. As we honor the history of those women who came before us, let’s also work to ensure that every woman’s voice is heard, valued, and celebrated. Join us in fostering a more inclusive culture. Loving your child is non-negotiable. That’s what Angie reminds us in our latest episode of Learn with Love supported by funding from The Helmsley Charitable Trust. We see Jubilee reconcile her faith and sexuality while Angie learns that showing unconditional love for her child means taking direct action. She takes action by listening to and reminding LGBTQ+ young people in her community that they are valid just the way they are. Bisexual youth like Jubilee and LGBTQ+ young people, in general, report lower rates of considering suicide when adults like Angie support them. Every day, you have the opportunity to be that one supportive adult in the life of a queer or trans young person. As Angie reminds us, it’s okay to have fear, but together, we can learn with love 🧡 https://lnkd.in/gQnNHXYv

No matter where you live, you deserve to feel safe there. This month, our Research Team investigated the mental health and experiences of LGBTQ+ young people in the rural United States. We found that those LGBTQ+ youth living in rural areas reported more negative lived experiences and overall mental health outcomes than those living in non-rural areas. Our findings dig deeper to explore how trans and nonbinary young people are impacted by rurality. LGBTQ+ youth (trans and nonbinary youth in particular) in rural areas reported higher levels of bullying, threats, and victimization, fewer supportive spaces, and a higher likelihood of attempting suicide. At The Trevor Project, our research aims to shed light on the needs and experiences of LGBTQ+ young people nationwide to better understand how we can show up as supportive adults and active allies. Your allyship to rural LGBTQ+ youth is lifesaving — our data proves it.
