Changing the World One Smile at a Time
About us
Smile Train is an international children’s charity and the first cleft-focused organization with a true model of sustainability. Smile Train empowers local medical professionals with training, funding, and resources to provide free cleft surgery and comprehensive cleft care to children globally. We advance a sustainable solution and scalable global health model for cleft treatment, drastically improving children's lives, including their ability to eat, breathe, and speak. Beyond surgery, our local partners also provide speech therapy, psychological support, nutritional services, orthodontics, and other essential forms of care to ensure that children with clefts have everything they need to not just live, but thrive. Our sustainable model makes us more efficient and effective than mission-based organizations, as Smile Train’s patients can receive care 365 days a year. In the last 21 years, we have supported safe and quality cleft care for 1.5+ million children across 90+ countries, and with the generous support of our donors, our work will continue until every child with a cleft has access to the high-quality care they need. This week, with the Frontline Health Workers Coalition and all its members, we're raising our voices to share the message that long-term investment is essential to ensure a robust health workforce that can fight the health challenges of today and ensure a healthier future tomorrow. "At Smile Train, we know that investing in health workers to provide cleft care is investing in healthier communities. In honor of World Health Workers Week, we’re grateful for the dedication and hard work of health workers worldwide. This video, "Healthier Together: A Path to a Better World," highlights how Smile Train and Kids Operating Room are addressing power outages in surgical settings with solar energy to save lives. #WorldHealthWorkersWeek #WHWWeek #SmileTrain
Smile Train is excited to announce our participation in "Healthier Together: A path to a better world", a film produced for Smile Train and Kids Operating Room by BBC StoryWorks Commercial Productions in consultation with the WHO Foundation! This video features Dr. Amos Zacharia Muzuka, a Smile Train partner anesthesiologist in Mbeya, Tanzania, as he shares his experience with a common and life-threatening challenge too often faced by surgical teams and patients in limited-resource settings: power outages. Together with our local medical partners, Smile Train and Kids Operating Room have worked to find and implement a solution, harnessing solar energy to provide a steady source of power for operating rooms while reducing environmental impact and saving lives. We celebrate Smile Train’s partnership with the Frontline Health Workers Coalition in supporting the dedicated healthcare workers who make life-changing cleft care possible. Dr. Flor de Maria Diaz Contreras, a passionate dentist in Oaxaca, Mexico, met baby Ana Sofia, a cleft patient in need, and in an instant, her work became personal. She adopted Ana Sofia, and together with her daughters, she built Fundación Contreras, a safe haven where children with clefts receive the medical care—and love—they deserve. Her story inspired “Yo Creo en Ti” (I Believe in You)—a song that spreads hope to cleft warriors worldwide. This #WHWWeek, we honor frontline health workers like Dr. Flor and her team, who ensure every child has a chance to smile, thrive, and be believed in.
