Professionals Collaborating to Overcome Obesity
About us
The Obesity Society (TOS) is the leading organization of scientists and health professionals devoted to understanding and reversing the epidemic of obesity and its adverse health, economic and societal effects. Combining the perspective of researchers, clinicians, policymakers and patients, TOS promotes innovative research, education, and evidence-based clinical care to improve the health and well-being of all people with obesity. The Society has more than 2,500 members, including researchers, healthcare providers and others working in obesity science, treatment and prevention. TOS publishes two journals, including the leading peer-reviewed scientific journal in the field, Obesity, and an open-access journal, Obesity Science & Practice. The preeminent international conference for obesity researchers and clinicians, ObesityWeek® is home to the latest developments in evidence-based obesity science: cutting-edge basic and clinical research, state-of-the-art obesity treatment and prevention, and the latest efforts in advocacy and public policy. Overcoming obesity requires multi-disciplinary approaches. This is the conference that encompasses the full spectrum of obesity science: from basic science research, to translational research and clinical application, to public policy; from diet, exercise, lifestyle, and psychology to medical and surgical interventions; from pediatric to geriatric to underserved populations. TOS is engaged in many other efforts to serve our members and the field, including our nearly 50 grants and awards, weekly news distribution through our eNews, political advocacy and clinical education.

The Obesity Society encouraged FDA to make important updates in clinical trial guidance for obesity drug development in formal comments submitted yesterday. TOS applauded the FDA for recognizing obesity as a complex, chronic disease and advocated for : 🔹 Inclusion of body composition measures (like BIA and waist circumference) alongside BMI 🔹 Use of person-first language and respectful terminology 🔹 Inclusion of diverse populations across race, age, and socioeconomic backgrounds – noting the need for more information for pediatric and senior populations 🔹 Nutritional and metabolic monitoring throughout clinical trials 🔹 Patient voices as central to drug development decisions We believe these changes are critical to improving treatment outcomes and ensuring future therapies are safe, effective, and beneficial to people living with obesity. CMS Decision Leaves Millions Without Access to Obesity Medications The Obesity Society is deeply disappointed by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services final rule continuing to exclude obesity medications from Medicare Part D and Medicaid coverage. This decision limits access to proven treatments for a chronic, complex disease that affects over 40% of U.S. adults. “This is a setback—but also a call to action for not only those who champion obesity care, but for clinicians across medicine and the patients they serve,” said TOS President Marc-Andre Cornier, MD, FTOS. ✅ TOS urges providers to diagnose obesity in the medical record and to support the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act, which would expand access to both medications and behavioral therapy for Medicare beneficiaries. 📢 We call on the entire medical community to advocate for accessible, evidence-based obesity care. 🔗 Read our full statement: https://ow.ly/FY5a50Vw5ua #ObesityCare #HealthcareAccess #CMS #GLP1 #PublicHealth #Medicare #TreatAndReduceObesityAct #TheObesitySociety
