  • There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to summer learning. Sarah Campbell from KIPP DC shared how her team approached the build vs. buy decision with clarity and purpose. They bought ELA from NSSI—because it aligned with their school-year curriculum and offered teachers a consistent, high-quality experience with built-in PD. They saw it as an investment not just in instruction, but in teacher growth. They built math internally—because that’s where they had the data, the flexibility, and the capacity to tailor it tightly to student needs. The goal? A program that helps students fill gaps now and helps teachers level up for the year ahead. Not every subject needs the same solution. What matters is choosing the right model for the right reasons. 💬 How are you thinking about the build or buy decision in your district? #SummerLearning #Curriculum

Over the past week, I’ve been reading reflections on ASU+GSV Summit. Cups are full and new ideas are brewing. I was a ASU-GSV first timer, so it has taken me a couple of days to process and gather my thoughts. Three key highlights stand out: First, it was a reunion. Reconnecting with Chris Kang Christopher Friedline, Jane Martínez Dowling, Matt Stephenson, Dacia Toll, Vicki Zubovic, Melanie (Waits) Dukes, Nikki Bridges, Jennifer Ramos, Jack Chorowsky, Richard Barth, and Katie Kirkpatrick brought back memories spanning my entire education career, from my TFA days in New Orleans to now. Second, I treasured the time to cultivate burgeoning relationships. Jessica Kuperberg, meeting in person with unstructured time was invaluable—I'm grateful to have you on the NSSI board during this crucial evolution. Aubrey White, thanks for humoring my enthusiasm about notebook paper and whiteboard desks at a tech conference. Neal Grimes, learning about Golden Apple Foundation's work to elevate teaching through mentorship was inspiring. Jay C., my husband was thrilled I met someone from BrainPOP—a resource he's leveraged for years as an award-winning 5th grade science teacher. Beth Rabbitt, despite being our first meeting, it felt like reconnecting with an old friend—you made me feel seen amid the conference chaos. Kristen McCaw, I loved brainstorming ideas on how The National Summer School Initiative (NSSI) and Seminar can partner to help schools realize the full impact of summer. Vivek Ramakrishnan, I'm grateful for our partnership in developing our foundational skills programming through Project Read AI, but more importantly I loved hearing more of your story and why you do what you do. Elana D. Leoni, thank you for all your pushes—your marketing guidance has been indispensable and you consistently challenge us to think more boldly and creatively about how we tell our story. Third, the learning was exceptional. Lora Kaiser, Cory Epler, Ph.D., and Craig Waterman , your insights on aligning instructional materials with state resources to improve student outcomes were illuminating. Dr. Brittany Miller and Jasmine Walker, thank you for sharing your expertise on outcomes-based contracting and how we can better center students. What strikes me most from this experience is the power of community in education. Whether reconnecting with longtime colleagues, forging new partnerships, or learning from experts, these relationships fuel the meaningful work we do. ASU-GSV reminded me that behind every educational innovation and improvement are passionate people committed to creating better futures for students. So I’m packing up all that people energy and getting back to it.  Until next year, stay classy, San Diego.

  • District leaders don’t ask this question casually. When Erica Godfrey from City Schools of Decatur said this during our recent LinkedIn Live, it resonated deeply. Not because it was flashy—but because it was true. If you’re asking should we build or buy, you already know something isn’t working as well as it should. Maybe it’s burnout. Maybe it’s inconsistency. Maybe it’s that gut feeling that your summer learning program needs a reset. The solution doesn’t have to be permanent. You don’t have to make sweeping changes. You can start small and pilot something new. Test a different model. Shift just one element—curriculum, staffing, or structure—and learn from the experience. Sometimes the most strategic move is the smallest one. Learn more insights from the conversation (link in comments). #EdLeaders #K12Education

  • ✅ Low lift, high return on investment. That was the goal for Erica Godfrey, Director of Elementary Teaching and Learning at City Schools of Decatur. When district leaders are trying to build an impactful and cost-effective summer program, they’re not just weighing budgets—they’re weighing burnout, bandwidth, and long-term impact. Godfrey shared how partnering with NSSI didn’t just protect teacher capacity—it brought consistency, comprehensive programming, and professional development that exceeded expectations. “I was pleasantly surprised and felt really supported,” she said. “And I think our teachers kind of shared that same sentiment.” Sometimes the return on investment isn’t just financial. It’s how supported your people feel. ❤️ #PD #ProfessionalLearning #SummerPrograms

Veteran educator Tracy Carness from Alliance College-Ready Public Schools serves up her take on NSSI’s summer program – where the model cuts the fluff and lets her focus on what really matters: teaching front and center.   #SummerLearning #SummerSchool
