The Rainbow Clinic at Mount Sinai provides specialized care for women who have experienced stillbirth. Led by Dr. Stone Joanne, the clinic supports expectant mothers with a history of pregnancy loss. In the U.S., more than 60 stillbirths occur daily, with up to 25% potentially preventable. While countries like Ireland, Australia, and the Netherlands have made progress in reducing rates, the U.S. continues to face high numbers. This teaser, featuring Dr. Stone and expectant mother Stephanie, is from “Before a Breath,” a documentary by ProPublica that follows three mothers who lost children to stillbirth and are now fighting for safer pregnancies, inspired by Pulitzer finalist Duaa Eldeib’s reporting. Join us for a free screening of “Before a Breath” this Thursday, April 10, from 6–8 PM, followed by a panel discussion. Location: The Mount Sinai Hospital - Stern Auditorium Annenberg Building Mezzanine 1468 Madison Avenue, New York, NY Seating is limited—RSVP: https://mshs.co/4hRRLB5 "Before a Breath” is distributed by ProPublica and Thirteen/WNET and is available for streaming on YouTube. This is an independently organized event inspired by reporting from ProPublica, an award-winning nonprofit newsroom.

More than 20,000 pregnancies in the U.S. end in stillbirth each year—but these losses are not inevitable. Research shows that at least one in four stillbirths, and nearly half of those occurring at 37 weeks or later, may be preventable. Before a Breath, a new documentary from ProPublica featuring Mount Sinai’s Rainbow Clinic, weaves together the stories of three mothers who lost children to stillbirth and are now fighting to make pregnancy safer. Inspired by Pulitzer finalist Duaa Eldeib’s groundbreaking reporting, this intimate and urgent film shines a light on stillbirth. You're invited to an exclusive screening of Before a Breath on Thursday, April 10, from 6–8 PM. A panel discussion will follow the screening. • Scott Hanson, 68, a retired FDNY marine division pilot and 9/11 first responder, was skiing alone on January 1 in Killington, Vermont. But after returning home, he felt unusually winded—a feeling he brushed off as being out of practice. A week later, Scott woke up dizzy with severe chest pain. Sensing something was wrong, he called his daughter, Heather McNally, and together they dialed 911. Hanson was rushed to Mount Sinai South Nassau, where EKG tests revealed a massive heart attack–the right sided artery of his heart was completely blocked. The damage was so severe that it tore an 8cm by 5cm hole in his heart, causing blood to flow in the wrong direction. For the Hanson family, the diagnosis was especially tough, as Scott’s wife of 35 years, Noreen, had passed away from cardiac arrest in 2019. At MSSN, a balloon pump was placed in Scott’s heart, and he was rushed to The Mount Sinai Hospital for advanced care. There, Dr. Anelechi Anyanwu replaced the balloon pump with an Impella device—a more powerful pump to improve blood flow and reduce further damage. After two weeks in the ICU, Scott underwent an 8-hour surgery led by Drs. Robin Varghese and David Adams on January 21 to repair the hole in his heart. His recovery was slow but steady, and he gradually regained his strength, working his way up to 1,000 steps a day. By February 4, he was able to return home. Today, Scott is on the road to recovery. His journey is a powerful reminder: Don’t ignore the signs. Even if you feel fine, unseen heart issues can have life-threatening consequences. Our experts urge everyone to prioritize heart health—stay on top of doctor visits and listen to your body. Read more: https://mshs.co/4idA2oD #HeartHealth #PatientStory
