Updates

  • This year's "Collecting Texas" event, which brings the community together to vote on the McNay's newest acquisition, showcased artists with ties to Houston. We are thrilled to announce that we acquired three new artworks from the event: Sajeela Siddiq’s Lady in Sari, 2019, received the most votes from event attendees and is now part of the permanent collection. In addition, Emily Joyce’s The Universe Is Not A Rose, 2022, and Gerardo Rosales’ Saqui Saqui, 2023, also entered the collection, thanks to generous support from donors. Thanks to all who joined us to help shape the future of contemporary art at the McNay and engage a diverse community in the discovery and enjoyment of the visual arts. Your support and passion help bring our mission to life.

  • The McNay closes out Women’s History Month with a celebration of women in sports and art. 🏀 🎨 We were honored to welcome staff from Spurs Sports & Entertainment (SS&E) for “Women in Sport & Art,” an event celebrating influential women, whose stories inspire and shape our collective culture. The afternoon included a guided tour of our exhibition "Sport and Spectator," followed by a conversation with Corinna Holt Richter, President and Chief Administrative Officer at HOLT CAT, Co-Chair of "Sport and Spectator," former Managing Partner of San Antonio Spurs, and McNay Trustee; Sarah Cardenas, Manager of Learning & Development, SS&E; and the McNay's Jenelle Esparza and Mia Lopez. We are grateful to partner with the San Antonio Spurs and Spurs Give in amplifying the impact of women leaders on the court and in the arts. A special thank you to Spurs Sports & Entertainment for their generous contribution in support of "Sport and Spectator" programming, helping us create spaces for access, belonging, and inspiration. Experience the intersection of art and athletics in "Sport and Spectator," on view in the Tobin Exhibition Galleries. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gdBMxKCf

  • We continue our celebration of Women’s History Month with a spotlight on artist Esmaa Mohamoud, whose work in "Sport and Spectator" challenges the game on and off the court. 🏀✨ Growing up as the only girl among four brothers, Mohamoud loved wearing jerseys, but she was once told she had to wear a dress to play outside. Now, in her 'One of the Boys' series, she fuses both worlds, reimagining basketball jerseys as voluminous ball gowns. Her work challenges the hyper-masculine ideals in sports while highlighting the lack of female representation. Catch her thought-provoking work on view at the McNay. 📸 Headshot courtesy of the artist. Esmaa Mohamoud, 'One of the Boys (Sculpture Series)', 2017-19.
