    Mr. Culinary Hustle

Today marks 13 years since I watched my first cakes and pastry items be made from scratch. On April 12, 2012, in The Doe Fund kitchen, I stood next to Chef Gino Dalesandro and learned how to make Chocolate Chip Banana Bread, Coffee Cake, Fresh Dinner Rolls, and buttercream frosting from scratch. I had never seen anything like it. That day sparked a passion that would ultimately change the course of my life. What started with the fermentation of yeast became the foundation for a pastry career that has taken me from that kitchen to national features, celebrity clients, corporate partnerships, and the founding of Fresh Taste Bakery. I’m proud of how far this journey has come—and even more committed to creating opportunities for others the way The Doe Fund created one for me. Here's to 13 years of growth, gratitude, and keeping it fresh. #ChefFresh #KeepinItFresh #PastryChefLife #DoeFundAlumni #BakingChangedMyLife #FromSecondChancesToSuccess #FreshTasteBakery

New York City Council Member, District 3

Great to have the opportunity to thank amazing New Yorkers of The Doe Fund who are out on a Sunday, removing graffiti vandalism and sprucing up our neighborhoods! This is one of the many initiatives that's I'm funding to lift up the quality of life in Council District 3.

  • Yesterday, The Doe Fund launched a new program with The STEM Alliance at our Webster Green supportive and affordable housing residence! This partnership brings hands-on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) learning to residents, many of whom are rebuilding their lives after experiencing homelessness. Through free tech skills training, free devices, and free or low-cost internet access, The STEM Alliance is helping bridge the digital divide and expand economic opportunity. One participant shared, “This alliance is about empowerment, dignity, and creating a future where everyone has the tools to thrive.” Follow along as residents reshape what opportunity looks like—one STEM lesson at a time. #SecondChanceMonth #STEMeducation

  • When Charles Franchino, our Workforce Development Manager, heard that the Local 12 Insulators Union would be distributing just 100 apprenticeship applications, he sprang into action. He knew exactly who should be first in line: Marquis and Terrell, two standout graduates of our Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) training program. The catch? Securing those coveted spots meant an overnight wait outside a Queens union hall. So Charles did what few would—he met the two trainees at their facility on Sunday night, drove them to the site, and stayed overnight to make sure they got in. He checked the line every 30 minutes while they rested in the warmth of his car. By morning, Marquis and Terrell had applications #26 and #27 in hand. Then, just days later, Charles drove them back to the union to hand-deliver their completed applications—ensuring they weren’t even a minute late. As Charles put it, "For me, there was never a second thought about doing this. It didn’t feel like going above and beyond—it was just the right thing to do. When the union first explained the process in an info session we had with them, including the overnight wait and the early morning rush, I knew immediately: I’m going to wait with them to make sure everything goes smoothly. If this were an opportunity I wanted for myself, I’d do whatever it took—so why wouldn’t I do the same for them?" This is what commitment looks like at The Doe Fund.

  • In a city of 8.5 million people, just 0.6% of NYC’s $107B budget went to workforce development last year. That figure underscores the need to reassess how we prioritize investments in economic opportunity. NYC Employment and Training Coalition (NYCETC)’s new report calls out this systemic underinvestment and the consequences for prime-age workers shut out of opportunity. The people who fuel our economy are being sidelined in the budget. If we want a stronger middle class, we need stronger investments in the adults who make NYC work. • For many Ready, Willing & Able trainees, legal challenges are a major barrier to stability. As The Doe Fund’s Legal Referral Manager, Crystal Ruiz helps connect trainees with the resources they need — from addressing past records, securing identification, navigating housing and employment rights, and much more.
