Today would have been the 98th birthday of César Chávez. With funds from the #GreatAmericanOutdoorsAct, César E. Chávez National Monument recently had the opportunity to engage the César Chávez Environmental Corps (CCEC) from the FIELD Institute in critical maintenance work. With help from the National Park Foundation, The Corps Network was proud to play a role in scoping projects. ▪️ Corpsmembers worked on the visitor center, Memorial Garden, and Helen’s Park, doing projects ranging from repainting and weatherproofing, to irrigation system rehabilitation and landscape restoration. Corps like CCEC are important partners for small and medium parks that may have limited staff capacity. Thank you to the Corpsmembers and the National Park Service staff who oversaw this work. ▪️ #NPS; #FindYourPark; #GreatAmericanOutdoorsAct; #GAOA; #maintenanceactionteams; #historicpreservation; #youthengagement

Five years ago, the bipartisan National Commission on Military, National, and Public Service published its final report, which set forth a vision to strengthen service to meet the needs of the United States. To mark this anniversary, we are excited to share that Katie O'Hara – an AmeriCorps alumna from Maryland Department of Natural Resources' Maryland Conservation Corps and current Data Coordinator at The Corps Network – was invited to speak on a panel at the Russell Senate Office Building in Washington, DC. She was also joined by Jackie Orellana, an alumna and current staff member from Latin American Youth Center – a member organization of #TheCorpsNetwork. Thank you to Katie, Jackie, and all the panelists for your contributions to our country and for an inspiring discussion about the power and impact of service.
