It sounds like common sense: Spend your career accumulating assets as you bring in paychecks, then when it’s time to retire, start taking distributions from that nest egg. But what happens when those assets are put in jeopardy because of market volatility and economic uncertainty? Is there a way to help ensure your hard earned resources don’t run out while you still need them? 📺 Join Certified Financial Fiduciary Don Chamberlin for a discussion about adding a preservation stage to your plan, keeping the assets you’ll need in the nearer term safe while giving assets that can wait for longer-term distribution time to recover from downturns and instability. Happy #RetirementPlannerFriday! This week, we asked Certified Financial Fiduciary® and Holistic Planner Derrick Gibbs a few questions about his role at Chamberlin. Here’s what he had to say: Q: What is bucket planning, and why is this concept central to our mission here at Chamberlin? A: “At Chamberlin, we take a three-bucket approach to retirement planning. The goal behind bucket planning is to time-segment your money for different periods of your retirement. Your “now bucket” is for a one year or less timeframe, your “soon bucket” is going to be for years 2-12 or so, and then your “later bucket” would be for 13+ years. The strategy would be to take all your income from your “soon bucket,” while simultaneously allowing your “later bucket” assets to grow. As long as you're not taking money directly from the assets in your later bucket, you're not exposed to the number one risk in retirement: the sequence of returns risk. This is when you take money out of a depreciating portfolio in those years when the market might be down. Don came over from the broker-dealer side of finance in the early 2000s when the market was down, and one of the main reasons he decided to go the independent route and start Chamberlin in 2002 was to better protect his clients from a market downturn. We've been using the bucket plan to protect our clients’ money since then, and it really can be one of the most protective ways we know of to shield our clients’ income from market risk while still having a strategy for accumulation of assets over time.”🪣🪣🪣 Q: What is evidence-based investing in retirement planning and why is this concept central to our mission here at Chamberlin? A: “So with evidence-based investing, we have to talk about the three different ways of investing. A lot of people are familiar with two of them. The first one is the use of active funds — fund managers that are actively trying to beat Wall Street every single year. Then you have index funds, such as Vanguard funds. You know when you invest in an index fund, you're going to get the market return, minus the expenses inside of the fund. Dimensional Fund Advisors — we have an exclusive partnership with them — have analyzed academic research from 1926 until now. They’ve found that if you take an index fund with certain tilts towards small-cap companies and value companies, those funds actually tend to outperform other index funds over time. So you might not necessarily see a lot of changes or a lot of growth in the first couple years, but if you stick with a long-term approach with that strategy, your funds grow at a lower cost. You're also improving your tax efficiency, and you're picking up those additional incremental returns over time.”📊 #RetirementPlanning #FinancialPlanning #Retirement #BucketPlan #EvidenceBasedInvesting
