Yesterday our team had the privilege to attend the Ohio House of Representative's opening ceremonies as the new legislative session kicks off. It was memorable in more ways than one. Speaker Huffman asked Judge Alice Batchelder, widow of the late Speaker Batchelder to officially swear him in. The last time the Judge swore in a Speaker it was Speaker Batch and Speaker Huffman was Speaker Pro-Tem at the time. Additionally, Speaker Huffman made a few very kind remarks about Speaker Batchelder and the influence he had on him throughout the years preparing him to one day be Speaker. Speaker Huffman will even be using the gavel he was gifted by Speaker Batch 10 years ago as he presides over House sessions this term. 10 years ago this week wrapped up the storied career of the late Speaker William G. Batchelder, who served 38 years in the Ohio Legislature ending the last four as his life-long dream as Speaker of the Ohio House. I have the unique distinction of having been a staffer for him his entire last eight-years (his second go around), serving as legislative aide, minority and majority policy director and ending his last year as Chief of Staff. He was a friend and mentor who loved the institution more than anything and it was his highest honor and privilege to preside over the "People's House." Along the way, I met so many collogues whom I now consider some of my best friends. We all loved Batch, what he represented and were grateful to learn and serve under him. We miss you every day Mr. Speaker and wishing you a happy heavenly birthday.

This week our client Chad Cole, Founder and Executive Director of the Brain Injury Research Foundation, kicked off proponent testimony for House Bill 434. This bill establishes the Traumatic Brain Injury Treatment Accelerator Pilot Program. There is very limited scientific research on curing Traumatic Brain Injury's (TBI), and HB 434 would incentivize both public and private research to cure, not control TBI's in the future. Chad gave compelling testimony on his own personal experience with a TBI.
