🚨 The grid is under pressure — and the future isn’t waiting. 🚨 With load growth accelerating, extreme weather intensifying, and a massive shift to clean energy underway, the power delivery system is being tested from all sides. So what’s next? 📌 T&D World Technical Editor Gene Wolf's new article dives deep into the future-gen technologies that are no longer “emerging” — they’re here, and they’re critical. From grid-enhancing technologies (GETs) to small modular reactors (SMRs) and enhanced geothermal systems, these innovations offer real-world solutions to real-world grid challenges. But adoption is lagging — and not for lack of potential. ✅ Dynamic Line Rating can boost capacity by up to 30% ✅ Advanced conductors offer 2–3x the throughput of traditional lines ✅ SMRs and geothermal systems can repower retired fossil-fuel plants So why aren’t we moving faster? 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gkFEHHEq #GridModernization #FutureGen #Utilities #EnergyInnovation #CleanEnergy #SMR #GETs #Geothermal #SmartGrid #TandDWorld

Is it time to retire the century-old rule for wood pole embedment? Ameren put it to the test — literally. As load growth surges and steel structures become more common, the traditional "10% + 2 feet" foundation rule is being reexamined. Ameren tackled the question head-on with a bold series of full-scale load tests on both wood and steel H-frame structures. What they found has major implications for how we design transmission foundations going forward. ✅ Confirmed: The century-old embedment rule still holds for wood. 🚀 Revealed: Steel structures require deeper embedment — and 2 extra feet made a huge difference in performance. This is a great case study in balancing innovation with engineering fundamentals, and a model for data-driven design evolution. 📖 Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/d8VYFS7q #Transmission #UtilityEngineering #GridModernization #SteelStructures #FoundationDesign #Ameren #PowerSystems #EnergyInfrastructure #UtilityInnovation #TDWorld

Is AMI 3.0 already here—and are we ready for it? Gene Wolf’s recent article “Smarter Tech = Smarter Grid” explores a compelling question: how do we evolve our smart grid technologies—especially AMI—when the pace of innovation is outstripping regulatory and operational inertia? 📈 From AMI 1.0’s two-way communication to the AI-enhanced and AI-driven capabilities of AMI 3.0, this piece covers the remarkable journey of metering technology—and where it might be heading next. 💡 AI isn’t just an add-on. It’s becoming a core enabler of the grid's next generation, driving real-time analytics, outage detection, even vegetation management to prevent wildfires. This is a must-read if you’re thinking about: -Grid modernization -Data + AI integration -The future of customer + utility interaction -What to do with the 1 billion+ meters already deployed 🔗 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gGTkGPz2 What’s your take—are we entering the AMI 3.0 era? Or are we still trying to fully realize 2.0? #SmartGrid #AMI #AI #GridModernization #UtilityTech #DigitalGrid #EnergyInnovation #TDWorld

Many utilities rely on imported materials for infrastructure projects, from transformers and conductors to solar panels and battery systems. Tariffs could drive up the cost of critical grid modernization efforts, renewable energy investments, and everyday maintenance work. On the flip side, some argue that tariffs might spur domestic manufacturing, ultimately strengthening U.S. supply chains and boosting grid resilience. So what do you think? 📸 Capturing Commitmen, and Courage When Pepco asked senior staff photographer Rick Giammaria to prepare a retrospective of his 35-year career, he didn’t just look back—he looked deeper. Rick’s lens has followed thousands of moments across Pepco, @Atlantic City Electric, and Delmarva Power. But one powerful theme emerged as he curated his gallery: how utility workers respond to crisis. From restoring power in the aftermath of devastating storms to the dramatic night a plane crashed into a Pepco transmission tower in Maryland, Rick’s photos tell stories of resilience, leadership, and the quiet heroism of utility workers who show up—no matter the conditions. The result? A moving and visually stunning tribute now on display at the Edison Place Gallery. Take a moment to experience the dedication behind the work they do. 👇 https://lnkd.in/gwWAyvcd #Photography #UtilityWorkers #Pepco #Exelon #EnergyIndustry #ThankALineman #VisualStorytelling #PublicPower

As someone who’s worked closely with NERC compliance and risk, Terry Brinker has seen how easy it is for organizations to think they’re in the clear — only to find out too late that passing an audit doesn’t mean you’re truly prepared. That’s why he is sounding the alarm in his article: “Preparing for NERC Registration and Compliance with New Inverter-Based Resource Rules” ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gAvdAnMi With NERC’s new rules on inverter-based resources (IBRs), hundreds of facilities — especially those integrating renewables — are now in scope for potential forced registration. Yes, forced — meaning NERC can place you on the Compliance Registry whether you’re ready or not. 💡 If your facility has a nameplate rating of 20 MVA+ and is connected at 60 kV or higher, the countdown to compliance starts now. In the article, he covers: ✅ What the new IBR standards mean for registered and unregistered entities ✅ How to assess your exposure and prepare for registration ✅ Why documentation, staffing, and cybersecurity are now non-negotiable ✅ Real-world steps to build a resilient, audit-ready compliance program NERC compliance isn’t optional — and the cost of being unprepared can be $1 million per day in fines. If you work in renewables, grid operations, compliance, or energy strategy, take a moment to read and share. Early awareness is everything. #NERC #Compliance #RenewableEnergy #GridReliability #IBR #EnergyStorage #UtilityLeadership #Cybersecurity #CleanEnergy #EnergyTransition
